Interesting.

Very interesting indeed! I was especially surprised at the depression era desserts! Tomato soup cake? Mock apple pie? Wow!
I wouldn’t think of making dessert if I were trying to feed a lot of people with limited resources!

I actually make a lot of these recipes that I didn’t know were created out of necessity during the depression era! Corn Chowder, bread pudding, potato pancakes to name a few. Thanks for sharing this!

Mmmmm latkes!
Back in high school, my best friend's dad made them in his ancient cast iron skillet that he wouldn't let anyone else in the family use or clean. :lol-2:
But, Mmmmmmm !!!!!!!!!

I'm supposed to keep my carbs down, but your post reminds me of how good they are.
A little can't hurt. Right?

I should look into making them, now that I have nice cookware.

I make Wacky Cake all the time, when we want a dessert, but I don't have any special ingredients. It's real easy and good!
I got the recipe from my grandmother.

Here is a great cookbook, the Household Searchlight. My edition was published in 1937.
Grandma had one and my mom had one.
I found my own copy on eBay a long time ago. It makes great reading!
I never tried the vinegar pie.

Saved the video for later, I know I'll love it.

People who know me don't get why, but I'm a huge fan and reader of cookbooks with stories. I love my library, buy a lot at Habitat, and make a yearly run to Ollie's for pool reads. I've collected some great treasures.

I love the reddit subs for old recipes, vintage cookbooks, and vintage menus.

im sure i made that peanut butter bread durring covid

i follow this guy on you tube
he is brilliant
i have even made a few of his recepies
@kenny you might enjoy the history

I love traditional latkes with potato, but I'm usually a low carb eater too. I have tried low carb cauliflower versions (Trader Joes) that were doughy and gummy and didn't hit the potato note...but the linked recipe above looks promising!

i just watched the whole video and sadly it was AI -there were a lot of pictures that made no sense, it lessened my enjoyment of the video :(2
