3.40 fancy yellow gia graded diamond w very strong blue

hi i just bought a diamond ring with the following gia graded stone
Natural Fancy Yellow
Center Diamond
Approx 3.40ct Oval Brilliant
GIA 2141498295
10.66 x 8.37 x 4.99mm
Natural Fancy Yellow / Even
Clarity VVS2
Polish Good
Symmetry Good

the stone looks great in pix. but it is graded with a very strong blue fluorescence. it doesn't seem to affect the vividness and the clarity, but i am slightly concerned. i guess my question would be is 22k too much for this? it was set in platinum with two 1/2 carat ovals on the sides, so a three diamond ring.

Did you see the diamond before buying? I think that would be necessary before having it set. Do you have pictures?
 
hi i bought it after it was set. it is an estate piece that the diamond was graded prior to setting by gia. the pix of the diamond look great but still with the blue fluoro makes me nervous.
the price was too good to pass up(i think!) esp since i can return it without question. see pix below

moved the pix to the post above. paid 21k for the ring, not 22k. think it's a good deal but can't tell til i see it in person.

It's GORGEOUS!!!! Yellow diamonds are growing on me! I love your oval!! Or ovals :bigsmile:
 
I think it looks gorgeous, too, and I think maybe you got a great deal! I love fluorescence so that would not scare me unless it makes the diamond cloudy looking, but it looks good in the pictures. Are the side diamonds graded? I'd probably have the whole ring appraised and tell them you do NOT want an inflated appraisal value.
 
i am crossing my fingers. the side diamonds aren't graded so i will have an appraisal done by someone here locally. i just bought the ring on ebay from a gentleman that does estate sales out in san diego. btw, this is an amazing site for diamond lovers!! i almost bought an egl certified ring but two people warned me off esp as it was certified in the setting and not as a loose stone.
 
Have you browsed thru other sites to compare yellow diamond ring pricing to yours (comparing your stats with what is available on the internet)? It is a beautiful ring and to me, I think you got a STEAL of a price!!

Take your time evaluating it when it arrives and maybe have an independent appraiser evaluate it. It looks gorgeous and I would LOVE something with strong blue fluoro!!!
 
i did a ton of research. this price was unbeatable. it should be, i think close to 40 k without the blue fluorescence. but even with that, i think to buy a stone of this size for literally 6k or so a carat, is a steal. i will definitely have it appraised though.
i felt safe as the seller has sold 800 plus items and has a 100 percent seller rating, plus the return policy.
plus, the best part is it was my actual right hand ring size!! that sealed the deal.

Well it sounds like a good purchase all around then!! When will it arrive? I'm excited to hear what you have to say about it once you see it IRL and most of all --- REALLY excited about pictures!!

Did you check out www.diamondsbylauren.com or www.fancydiamonds.net as well? Both are well known for their coloured diamonds - have a look and enjoy the eye candy!
 
Beautiful ring!

In FCDs fluorescence is not just just about the concern for the oily/milky look.
Very Strong Fluorescence makes the stone 'glow' a certain color under UV light, which sunlight has lots of.
It may make the stone look better or worse, hence a price adjustment.

Judgement of what color looks "better" or "worse" is subjective but over time the market has established some degree of agreement on what is more or less desirable to the majority of customers since they must price the stones.

Fluor's effect on FCD color must be evaluated in person for each stone on a case by case basis.
FCDs are rare so you can look around and try to find comps, BUT the color of the yellow and the color of the fluor and how the fluor changes the color in sunlight all vary so price comparisons are futile.

Within the same GIA color grade of Fancy Yellow one diamond can have a touch of brown, orange, or green but not enough for GIA to grade it Fancy Brownish Yellow, Fancy Orangy Yellow, or Fancy Greenish Yellow.
Naturally the ones that have a touch of green will be more valuable than those with a touch of brown, again even though they both were graded just pure Fancy Yellow by GIA.

Even the amount of Yellow itself can vary within the same GIA color grade.
I know Leibish chops up one GIA color grade into 10 degrees of color strength, and prices accordingly.

Notice in the description they say the diamond has 10 out of 10 color saturation, meaning it has the strongest color within that GIA grade.
Of course more color means more $$$.

The way the fluor affects the color is also very individual and not captured by the GIA grading and affects price.

If I were you, I'd take it into full sunlight and ask yourself if the color is less attractive to you.
If not, I'd just forget the Very Strong Blue Fluorescence.
Keep in mind that all diamonds will reflect lots of blue under a blue sky.

Yes very strong fluor probably lowers the value for resale, but it probably lowered the price you paid so IMHO it's a wash.
In this case all that matters is whether you like the stone in all lighting.

i am definitely taking it outside as soon as i get it(tuesday) and see what it looks like in sunlight. i am assuming we will have sunlight this dreary month:)
will try to post pix of the "real" ring when i get it.
 
BTW, read this article on UV strength on sunny days vs. on cloudy days.
I'd also take it out on cloudy days and look at it under a white sky that contains some UV.

Viewing under an even white sky would prevent you seen blue reflected from a blue sky.

The article talks about cloud's effect on UV A vs. UV B, but I'm not sure which stimulates fluorescence more.

The seller is great and you are safe. He is my favourite seller. I was going to get my friend to buy that ring.

I have Fluor in mine. I thought it was going to be a problem but when it's outside the Fluor makes it glow!
 
My yellow has fluoro as well (medium blue). It does affect the coloring, lightening the intensity a bit when viewed in strong, direct sunlight. However, I feel the lowered intensity still leaves the diamond in the Fancy Intense range, so it was a concession made happily. :))

That ring is stunning - honestly one of the best buys I've seen!
 
I couldn't possibly add more to what the others have already, but I wanted to say that I think that the ring looks beautiful and I can't wait to see more pictures and hear your thoughts. It seems that I've fallen in love with yellows lately...just one more thing to add to my already long list of wants! ;)) ;))
 
that ring is stunning and a great price...as long as the SBF doesn't make the stone milky or oily you should be fine. I've always wondered if SBF in a yellow diamond would make it turn green in some lighting (yellow + blue = green)...that would be a cool effect and give it more character. Looks like a winner to me.

the ring is just as gorgeous in person. smaller than i like though!! should i have it reset like my diamond studs to get it to look bigger? i wear a 7 carat emerald cut diamond on my left hand which now looks enormous and out of proportion with this one. the studs are one carat fancy yellow each.

Wow! What a beauty! I would love to see handshots and double hand shots with your emerald for size comparison. I think putting a halo around the exisiting setting could be beautiful, but I also love the way the classic 3 stone is now :appl:

How does it look outdoors? My only concern is that the strong blue fluorescence will affect the saturation of the fancy yellow diamond negatively, lessening its pop of colour because it cancels out the yellow. Its effect is different from what one sees in colourless diamonds, where it can enhance the whiteness of a low coloured diamond.
 
here's my emerald cut diamond(a little dirty:( and doesn't photograph well unless in direct sunlight or with flash) and my new yellow side by side. my emerald cut diamond sits up and the new one is shallower, it feels awkward!!
anyway, am going to take the new yellow to my jeweler and see what he thinks.
i am a bigger the better sort of girl.......

If you don't love it, return it. However, if you're right-handed, having a smaller, lower ring seems like it would be an advantage. That's not a small ring by any means, but compared to your e-ring, it's definitely smaller.

it's beautiful outside without any murkiness. i am still stunned at the price i paid for this. i truly think that the blue fluoro downgraded what they thought it was worth. the interesting thing is that my yellow studs also (gia cert each individual stone) have med blue and sparkle beautifully in sunlight and indoors.

liz, i can't bear to return it....i think i will have it reset. even if i wear it for a few years and upgrade larger, the price i paid makes it worth holding onto.
