Hey Friends,

So I was recently at the Tucson Gem Show in search of a 3-5ct Pink Sapphire. I purchased this 3.95ct sapphire for a member of my family that I am very close to. She is like a 2nd mother to me so when she expressed the desire for a pink sapphire ring I was more than happy to help!

What sparked this was last year she was at a show in Las Vegas and in the lobby was a case with a beautiful pink sapphire ring. The stone was very large and so was the price! She then asked me if a pink sapphire could be purchase within a reasonable budget. I told her that I felt a good 3-5ct pink sapphire could be purchased in the $3500-$8000 range depending on weight and treatment. Her biggest concern was that the sapphire would have great color... something that catches your eye from across the room.

The requirements were simple.
Color Color Color!
Eye clean.
Oval, or Cushion Cut.
Heated or Unheated
3-5ct.

I searched every dealer at the Gem Show in the convention center of Tucson. The selection of large pink sapphires was very limited but luckily I found the perfect stone for her.

Bill Vance is the dealer that I purchased the sapphire from. Bill was wonderful to deal with and possibly the most experienced Gem dealer I have ever encountered. He is a Master Cutter who has over 40 years of experience. Bill showed me some of his re-cuts and I was very impressed. The sapphire I purchased was not cut by Bill unfortunately; however the native cut on the stone is pretty good.
Bill really took his time showing me his inventory and explaining the history behind each stone. It was a great opportunity to deal with someone who has so much experience. On a side note Bill had the best collection of Red Beryl I had ever seen. It is so rare to see larger examples of red beryl, of which Bill had quite a few!

Bill offered me this Oval 3.95ct Pink Sapphire for $4500 which included a GIA Report. I louped the stone and could see some light bubble inclusions, but these were not visible to the naked eye so that was ok. The saturation was very strong and I felt the color was close to what I was looking for. The price felt comfortable to me after seeing what the other dealers were asking for pink sapphires. Bill told me that the stone was heated when I first asked to see it, but upon opening the GIA report he noticed that the stone was unheated. I could see a look of disappointment on his face. He calmly called his wife over who had marked the stone as heated in the show case. She looked at the report and realized the mistake that had been made. I could tell she felt terrible about the mistake, but a price had already been offered to the customer. Bill looked at me and said "well what can you do mistakes happen." Bill realizing that he had under quoted the sapphire looked up at me and said "would you like a $6500 sapphire for $4500?" This really says a lot about the kind of business Bill runs. I was really impressed to see him honor the original price in this situation. Some may think that this might have been a sales technique, but the disappointment I saw on Bill's face was genuine. Not to mention $4500 was a decent price even if it had been heated. Mistakes happen, especially with such a large inventory.

I took a couple pictures and emailed them to my relative. She loved the color! She actually screamed when she saw the pictures, haha! I was overjoyed to have found the perfect color for her! I promptly told Bill that I would take the sapphire. $4500 was exchanged and the sapphire was mine.... well at least until I set it and send it to the rightful owner. ;))

Here are the pictures. Please keep in mind that these pictures are really close up so some inclusions are visible that the naked eye can not see.

Saturation saturation saturation! It's beautiful, Justin, & what a story & price. The cut looks okay, size is terrific, and I love the color shift in incandescent light. I think the sapphire gods were looking out for you that day. :appl:

omg that fluro!!!!! that sucker must glow like it's alive

It is pretty thought I agree the cut is lacking. Glad you had a good time at the gem show!

She is lucky to have someone like you pick out such a beautiful stone. I love the saturation of pink, and the fluor. Thanks also for giving us a good review.

I have loved Bill & Elke since the first time I ever went to a gem show. They are always both so sweet and generous with their time. They always make a visit with them so much fun AND informative. I always leave with new knowledge. Now your experience with them makes me love them even more :D Congrats on the sapphire!

Congratulations on a great find. Like others have stated, Bill and Elke are very nice and very knowledgable. I was quite disapointed that they weren't at the Chantilly Intergem last weekend.

This, exactly! I'm happy to hear that you, like many of us (I followed the recommendations here to find them), have discovered how wonderful they are - honest, committed, enthusiastic (I don't recommend anyone go see them at a gem show unless they have at least a good hour, because they have lots of info to impart and lots to show). Justin, of course when you mentioned the price without mentioning the treatment, I thought "that is good for a heated stone," especially these days with rapid increases (a dealer friend told me a while ago to buy pinks because demand was rising on them; alas, pink is not my thing :praise: ). You got an excellent price! How nice of your second Mom to have someone she can absolutely, solidly, 100% count on! How awesome of you to take it so seriously and get such a good price (I know that's who you are, Justin, but still - you went to every dealer there! That's love).

As for the stone, I can't really comment on the color, but I love the strawberry soda aspect to it (at high magnification) and the high crown and small table.

Congratulations! Oh, and aren't you coming up on your one year anniversary soon?

I think your relative will be very happy and it was good of you to find her a stone.

Do you mind if I say something? This stone isn't the sort of quality that I expect you to pick. You like highly saturated stones and developed a good eye when you were looking for your blue sapphire. So I'm surprised that this stone captured your heart because to me it's lacking in saturation and the cut is off also. Now of course that's being very picky because overall (and certainly for somebody who knows nothing about gemstones - not you, your relative) this will just have the WOW factor all over it. What I suspect is that the high crown will mean that this sapphire performs very well and I can imagine it capturing hearts just on that alone! I'm positive that she will love it and it has the added benefit of size and a good price!!! I'd be interested to know how she'll set it and I do hope you keep us appraised of how it develops.

I feel like an idiot but I have been searching through google trying to find a website for Bill Vance and am having no luck finding a site that is working, any help would be awesome! TIA

They are Vance Gems and I'm not sure they have an internet presence. They do, however, make the gem show circuit :))

I don't think Bill and Elke have a website or if they do, it is never updated. You'll either have to call them (which I've done in the past) or find their booth at the gem show. Wonderful couple who does honest business.

Justin,
Your "mom" is very lucky to have you look out for her. She's likely to have some crap sapphire if she tried to buy something for herself. This one will stand out from the crowd.

This is so beautiful! They sound like a great vendor too, with plenty of integrity!

It is a gorgeous stone with a beautiful story and I am so happy that you found it for you "mom" She is lucky to have such a caring son! Congrats

What a beautiful stone! Your Mom is so lucky!

Bill also sounds like a great honest vendor too.

Beautiful pink sapphire. Love the color, and that thing is going to glow in the sunlight, and will delight your dear friend.

I love spending time at Vance Gems display. They come to my town in June. They have such pretty stones, and while pictures are awesome, seeing the stones in person is fantantic. My pink star sapphire came from them last year, and the year before that Elke helped me select a pair of blue zircon for earrings. These are among my most colorful gems.

Looking forward to pictures of your project as it moves along.

Wow thank you all so much for the kind comments! This is definitely a fun project and I am excited to have the stone set!

The two things that are impossible to convey with a picture are: the glow and brilliance a the stone. And really that is what attracted me to the stone in the first place. Its true the cut isn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination but I think its performance is acceptable. Cut was lowest on the list of requirements for this project so that definitely reflects in stone I purchased.

So looking back on my first post I realized just how tired I was when I took those first pictures. After consulting with my Wife we both agreed that new pictures must be taken to do the stone justice. The new in focus pictures are not going to make the sapphire something that it isn't but at least it will give you a better idea of how the stone really looks in real life. If feel these pictures really show the strengths of the stone. Using some plant leaves in the back yard really helped give the contrast of color that my first pictures were lacking. Thanks to the help of my lovely Wife I feel that we got the lighting perfect this time! As you will see, when you have a stone with as much fluor as this one the difference between direct sunlight and indirect is very noticeable. This pink sapphire really has taken a piece my heart. It has a life of its own and in each new lighting environment shows me something new. Enjoy the pictures!

LD you know me well :)) and you can always tell me your honest opinion. Yes if this stone had been for my personal collection I doubt I would have bought it. Cut, Clarity, and Saturation are very important to me personally, however my relative doesn't share the same perfectionism.

Honestly LD I will disagree partially on your comment regarding the saturation of this stone. When it is in direct sunlight the saturation is close to what most would call Vivid. Now in other lighting environments I do agree that the stone could be more saturated. I was pleasantly surprised by the color shift indoors though. Incandescent light really brings something new to the attitude of the stone.

You are 100% correct the high crown of the stone really helps in the brilliance department! The stone just shimmers! Another thing that I can't really capture with a camera unfortunately.

Hopefully this gives you more clarity as to why I made the purchase.

Thanks for the new pics - so artistic and all (is that wife's influence? ). In direct sunlight, it certainly does not close up at all and in fact looks the most saturated. Its probably an optical illusion but it looks asymmetrically cut in the first two pics...that is, the top side looks longer than the bottom side. That said, great performance in daylight.

Wow - those new pictures are beautiful. If that's its true nature, what a cool stone! Thanks for sharing the story of finding it too.

I love it even more now! Promise you'll come back with pics once it's set.

Laurie, Haha you made me laugh with the sapphire gods comment! I guess its true they do seem to show favor on my sapphire purchases! :saint:
I agree the color shift is very fun and a wonderful surprise. That was one thing I wasn't really able to test at the show before I purchased the stone.

The new eye candy is fabulous. The sun really amped up the colour and the green backdrop gave it excellent contrast. The picture quality is only something I can envy; so in focus, sharp and detailed.

The difficulty though is that the intended wearer will not typically have green hands!

However, it seems Justin_Cutter knew exactly what he wanted, and what compromises were acceptable, and got it! I think, overall, the stone is beautiful.

There is always green gold.

Thank you Justin, I have already been in email contact with Elke (they are sooo attentive) :appl:

I looked at the first pic and thought 'nice', then I looked at the fluor shot and thought 'oooooh!', and finally I saw the first leaf shot and thought 'ooOOOOOooooh!'. Could you take a picture with it on a hand please? I'm assuming it'll be a ring.
Very nice of you to hunt this down for your 'mum'. Lucky lady.

Thank you also for your gem show thread. Informative and drool-worthy. :))
