Trying again to post a comparison video of two 4 carat emerald cut stones. I almost purchased the one on the left- it was a K color and faced up 4.5 carats. I didn't quite feel right about it, and I'm glad I turned it down. The one on the right is 4 carats but faces up 5. And the lower depth doesn't affect its luster. It is $20k more than the K colored stone, but better to get "the one" than "the almost". Now I need help finding someone to set it before Christmas. Ha.

What are your opinions on the stone, and how would you set it? Simple platinum solitaire or 18k yg solitaire with platinum basket? Thanks, everyone.

I know this likely isnt what you want to hear, but I prefer the k color. It has more scintillation and is more lively

I welcome all opinions! So, I had a pair of 2 carat perfectly cut, fiery H colored studs, and I traded them in within a few years for a pair of E colored, more included studs with more brilliance than fire. My jeweler thought I was crazy. I guess it’s true that everyone sees things differently!

Old vs new:

Have you seen it in person?
If not, can you before its set and with a return policy?

My jeweler viewed it and said it’s a beautiful stone. Hope he’s right! I can return it if I don’t love it.

Me too. Thanks for saying this, I thought it was just me.

Here's another comparison, BUT it's not apples to apples because the K on the left was filmed in natural light and the I on the right was filmed in artificial light.

Does anyone like the diamond? I’m so bummed, because I’ve been looking for a long time and thought I’d finally found the one. It was listed on Whiteflash and Ascot, so I know it’s a pretty stone. I just didn’t expect the responses.

We're looking at images and you saw both diamonds, am I right? "The One" is the one that's most beautiful in your eyes. They're both lovely stones and step cuts are all about personal preference. Please don't feel bad about your choice.

I haven’t seen either one in person. All I’ve got are the videos I’ve shared and the opinions of the jewelers filming. I felt like the K was glassy and kinda sloppy. The I may not have as much fire, but it has very few dark areas for a 58% depth stone. Plus, it measures 12.75 x 7.4, which is huge! My current ring that I’ll wear on my right hand has a huge look, so I’m not willing to buy any stone below a certain size. At first my budget was $50k, but it had to be bumped up to $70k to get a stone in the size I want and I color or above. Also, I only want a stone with a 1.6 or higher l/w ratio. So basically, I’ve been looking for a unicorn.

A unicorn indeed. Well, don't buy a K if you don't want to see any tint, I have a 1.07 K EC and I see it indoors. Doesn't bother me at all but this is your ring and your parameters.

That was a big worry for me with the K- I found myself trying to talk myself into the warmth because I liked the size and sparkle. It would have been fun to wear for 5 years, and then I was planning to upgrade to a whiter stone around the same size. I decided it’s worth spending $20k more to get the forever stone. Or at least I hope so.

Anyway, I appreciate the feedback. I will post photos once I receive it!

Being listed on whiteflash doesnt mean it's a good stone. They have virtual inventory like many other jewelers. So this isnt one of their in house stones.

Not to say it wont be nice in person, but being listed on WF isnt relevant to performance

What’s the depth on the I color?

With your budget, why not consider using a concierge like Jon @ Distinctive Gem? Isn’t the fee like $1000. Seems like short money for a purchase of this size.

Ok, sorry about that.

I’ve had literally 7 different top notch jewelers/diamond dealers search for me. A few of them found something they thought would be great (I didn’t like any of them) and the rest found nothing.

The depth is 58% and the table is 64%. Excellent polish and symmetry. No fluorescence. Medium girdle.

Oops sorry, IDJ is the dealer I was thinking of.

They found this gorgeous stone.

Are you able to get an ASET on the I color?

How are you planning to set the stone? As an aside, my mom’s ec is a J/K and I used to find it too tinted. But I reset it for her and now I love it.

Oh that’s beautiful! Love the baguettes surrounding it. My current ring is similar but really chunky, so I want a very simple solitaire. I was thinking either platinum or 18k yellow gold with a platinum basket. Here’s my current ring. 944FE608-C6A5-49B9-A450-01AADA31F70E.jpeg944FE608-C6A5-49B9-A450-01AADA31F70E.jpeg

Please let us know how you like it and send photos. I'm already imagining it in a setting like the halo above.

My thought is to set it in a simple solitaire setting (mainly bc I spent $66k on the stone alone and am out of cash) and then one day maybe I’ll put it in a halo of some sort.

What is the size of the main diamond in the (jawdropping) ring you show about?
A bezel setting might be a striking complement to that ring. Look on Frank Darling's site, he does great bezels with step cuts.

Thank you! I’m proud of it. I designed it with lots of help from a talented jeweler. It’s platinum and quite heavy!

It’s the stone my husband proposed with as a solitaire 15 years ago. It’s 1.17 carats, F color and somehow VS2 despite the GIA cert only showing two tiny feathers on the back side edge.

I would LOVE a yellow gold bezel, and that’s why I was entertaining the K colored stone. But I’ll have to see if it would be complementary to the I colored stone.

Brent Neale and Singlestone have gorgeous bezel settings. I drew inspo from them both when I bezel set my own ec.

How do you feel about the L/W ratio of the I color vs the K colored diamond? The I is definitely on the longer/skinnier side. For me, personally, that's not my favorite look for an EC. But there isn't one right answer, it is all about looks/feels right for you. I do prefer the I color to the K, which is of course much warmer.

I don’t know why, but for me, 1.6-1.7 l/w ratio is ideal. I had a beautiful stone with a 2.0 l/w sent to me, and I didn’t love it. Too long and skinny, even for me! I am really hoping this stone is the Goldilocks!
