If they accept it, the estimate will most likely be in line with the recent auctions - and that DiamanteBlue has already ciited. I don't think there is any reason for a reputable auction house to contradict their previous estimates.

I know of comparable quality (Burmese, unheated, good color, from slightly included to eye clean or better) but more like 15-20 cts not twice that! And for such a smaller sister saturated darkish blue, perfect clarity and cut 20k/ct is fair game. Another larger piece but medium blue and with some visible inclusions thoughout comes for 3k/ct. Anything inbetween is feasible too. 50 carat? Where do you find those for comparison anyway!? It feels foolish to extrapolate the price per carat for twice the weight - how much comparable goods in that price range might sell at any given time is not something I know, but would want to before guessing any further. Your pictures makes numbers less than 10k/ct sound stupid, but what do I know? The same 10k/ct goes for a 80 carat Burmese sapphire in a ring by Leighton. I ignore the heated/unheated status of that one.

Hi,

This is a 36.38 Carats Kashmir Origin Blue Sapphire certified by SSEF that will be auction by Southeby''s Geneve'' on 17th November.

The Base bidding price is set at US$240,000.00 -- US$300,000.00

Guess what will be the final auction price next week ?

I'll probably be sorry for venturing to say this....

Anyway: I wouldn't be surprised to see it above the high estimate, something around 500, say, to keep it less silly. Although more crossed my mind.

This is fun... I looked it up at Sothebys and it wasn''t labeled: "Important" or "Very Fine"...even though it certainly looks important and very fine to me!

So I''m going to make what I thought was a lowball guess...(at least until I saw Ana''s guess

This (item lot # 419) sold for < US$8,000/ct. The total was about $288,000 US dollars.

Item lot # 445 ( a fancy vivid pink diamond (10.31ct) ring ) sold for about $3,879,000 US dollars.

Joker....

In my RHR shopping...

My local Neiman Marcus has a 50 carat sapphire ring in their safe. The price -- $1million. It was too expensive to show on the floor. We would have had to go to a private room, so I didn''t view it. I don''t know the specs or the provenance of the stone either. My saleperson is a friend and she knows this was way out of my budget.

Doesn''t eight thousand per carat seem low for a KASMIR sapphire of that size??

He, he... so we were wrong. It was the largest single piece in the catalog and... yeah forget it.

About the price / carat, well, I don't think this is a good indicator for large sales. It just makes no sense. Smaller stones will likely be allot more expensive per carat. A couple in the same sale were just that.

Neiman Marcus is probably not expecting to sell the piece, only to brag about 'the million dollar sapphire' in their vaults.

The strategy must be working well, otherwise... perhaps we would not have thought the respective sapphire was under priced

8,000/ct is low for a Kashmir sapphire. Collectors watch the auction houses daily and stones do not slip under the radar. The stone probably had a few major cons.
So.. do you think Skinner went cheap?

For the record since the auction will eventually fade away...

The desciption goes: "18kt Gold, Sapphire and Diamond Ring, Tiffany & Co., c. 1910, prong-set with a cushion-cut sapphire weighing 3.338 cts. flanked by old European-cut diamonds, approx. total diamond wt. 1.40 cts., size 5 1/4.Note: Accompanied by AGL certificate no. CS 37881 dated 8 August 2005 stating that the origin of the sapphire would be classified as Kashmir, with no evidence of heat treatment."

It can't be the scratches that account for the 15-20k estimate.

It''s a lovely ring, but I don''t think it''s worth the $$$.

Neiman''s had a ring from Tiffany from the same time period, same Kashmir origin sapphire. I''m not sure what the weight was. Though the price was $31,000. That wasn''t worth the $$$ to me either.

You weren''t really wrong.
Just wrong that day. Yesterday you would have been right.

A ring with a cushion-shaped sapphire weighing 40.10 carats sold yesterday at Sotheby''s. Hammer Price with Buyer''s Premium: $956,800 USD (lot #449). That''s about $24,000/ct
In that same auction, a loose cushion shaped diamond, weighing 3.16 carats and with a GIA report of Fancy Intense Blue, Natural Color, VS1 clarity; sold for $1,091,200 USD (lot#320)

Joker....

P.S. Hope you feel better now.

He, he... thanks

This thread has taught me a few things already, no worries ...

So what wound up happening w/ the giant sapphire?

Thanks for bumping this thread, Innerkitten!

Didn''t Joker say above that it sold for $8000/ct?

Don''t you just love threads like this?
