Hi all! Trying to decide on one of these two crown solitaire styles for my new diamond. I really like both and keep going back and forth.

The 8-prong pictured holds a stone close in size to my round brilliant which is 8.5mm - I don't think it looks like too many prongs at all. I realize I likely won't be able to pair a band with the 8-prong very easily -- that's actually kind of a relief, since I spent the last year and a half trying to find the perfect band for my current solitaire (with no luck).

I'm drawn to the 8 at the moment because it's different, I like the top view for sure... the 6 prong is an easier choice for me because it's more in my comfort zone...

Does anyone have any experience with one or the other, or any thoughts to share? I'll be getting the ring in platinum if it helps (yellow gold doesn't look good on my skin tone). Adding a poll for fun if you just want to pick your favorite.

Thanks!!

This if a truely personal choice! I like 6 prong for myself! You really can’t go wrong on this…

Eight for me, my spinel is an oval in an eight prong crown type mount. I like the antique feel of an eight crown.

Eight for me too, with delicate prongs that don’t overwhelm.

Eight prongs helps emphasize the roundness of the diamond. Six prongs are pretty good too, but depending on the setting, the diamond sometimes has a hexagonal look to it.

So either way. I like both. I guess I’m no help at all.

I know! I’m torn, I have a Tiffany style currently so kind of want to try something different, but will I regret it is the question..

I love your ring! I do like mixing the antique feel with a modern make and stone

I’m with you on the delicate prongs ! and a little apprehensive about a custom version of the 8 prong turning out right. I know what you mean about the roundness and hexagonal look, too.

The two settings are different not just because they have a different number of prongs, but also because the donut at the bottom is much bigger in the 8-prong setting. If you wanted, you could decide on a 6-prong setting with a bigger donut, or an 8-prong setting with a smaller donut.

For example, here's my sapphire which I set in an 8-prong crown setting with a smaller (but taller) donut. I hope this is helpful rather than confusing!

@glitterata beautiful ring! Thank you - maybe I’ll consider a larger donut on the six prong!

What kind of stone is this for? If you got an antique stone with a thin girdle (which is very common) an 8 prong setting will offer more protection

**edit duh I see you said MRB

I prefer 8 aesthetically for an antique look. I prefer 6 prong for a modern stone

I’ve always loved 8 prong settings but I recently changed to a 6 prong solitaire and I love it. My diamond somehow looks much brighter and bigger to me. If I had to pick based on the two photos I would go for the six prong.

Interesting! Thank you! I was wondering if the 8 prong makes the stone look bigger, supposedly the one in the 6 prong pictured is larger than the one in the 8 prong but perhaps that’s not correct. Also setting height might make a visual difference

You can't go wrong with either and they both look fabulous. If this were for a OEC I'd vote 8 prong, but since it's a MRB, I prefer the 6 prong by a very slight margin.

Thank you all for your input! I just sent my email requesting the 6 prong one. I love the 8 from the top view but a little unsure if I’d love the side/ profile views. What a relief to have a decision after several days and nights studying every ring in existence and changing my mind a hundred times. Only to go with something pretty similar to what I’ve been wearing for years !

this is what I came here to say. The aesthetic overall is different, so you aren't comparing apples to apples. I love 8 prongs when they are delicate like @glitterata just showed, but prefer a 6 prong tiffany style solitaire vs one with the bigger vintage style donut, but it's definitely a personal preference.

Yeah I really like the bigger base for something different, but I’m too chicken to embrace the change. I’ll go for it on the next ring!

if anyone see this - how does this CAD look for the ring? I’m not so great at reading these - and I only had these 3 views to send of the inspiration ring. Thanks!

I am not the best with CADs either but I think it looks great! I love the shank narrowing to the head and the flowery, cupcake prongs!
What are your thoughts?

Thank you! I think it looks good, but - I wonder if the shank would be more comfortable and look more interesting if it was a little wider ? Should the stone be any higher or is it just right? Is the donut wide enough? Too many thoughts !

I think it looks great given your inspo pics

Thanks so much! Do you have any input on the shank width - would it be more comfortable if a little wider or good to go as-is?

I think 2.2/1.8 will be comfortable as is. I wouldn't worry about changing it at all! Not sure how thin it gets at the top (by the stone itself), so I would want to make sure it doesnt present any structural issues there, but I think overall he nailed the inspo pics (granted I'm not a CAD expert so I could be missing something!)

Yay! Thank you again. I can ask for their input about the structural integrity. Otherwise I’m so excited to say no changes - for the first time ever! I think they’re quite sick of me.

Ayuh, another vote for it's good as is!
2.2/1.8 has enough integrity that you won't have to worry about it. Looks perfect, and the shoulders have a nice slope that adds strength to the taper, just like the inspiration.

Wonderful! Thank you so much

Thank you! I love it too, but I’m still on the fence and hoping I’ve made the right choice. I also wanted two different 4 prong settings and a bezel setting - I’m all over the place! I was stuck on the designs for the others and I’m anxious to get a ring done already. I figure this is a safe enough choice and I can get a different design another time

Not that you needed another voice saying that the CAD looks spot on for matching the inspo ring, but it looks spot on to me too!

I’ll take all of the reassurance, thank you!

Because I can’t leave well enough alone - I found a video of the inspiration ring and took screenshots showing other views! There are two things I noticed and wonder if I should request as changes for mine.

My favorite part of the inspiration ring is all of that open spacing around and under the prongs - maybe these two things I see now contribute to that: 1. the donut appears a bit wider than on my cad, and 2. the dip of the prongs at the sides appears to stop where they meet the shank, not go all the way down to the donut… what do you all think?

(The diamond in pics is 8.8mm and mine is 8.5, if that makes a difference with the donut width or appearance)

@emmy12 @lovedogs @ItsMainelyYou @MamaBee @MissGotRocks and anyone else please feel free to chime in -thx!!

Prongs can bend, losing the diamond so ... if all else is equal, more prongs are better at holding the diamond in place.
Infinite prongs (bezel) is even more secure than prongs.
