6ct emerald or radiant?

Hello all!

I am looking to upgrade my diamond next year, but I’m conflicted on which cut.

My current e-ring is a 3.45ct I vvs1 elongated radiant.

I’ve always wanted a big emerald cut, but I feel like I need to go really big on the emerald to love it. I’ve tried on 5-6ct emerald cuts and they feel as big as my current ring or just a little bigger.

So I feel like maybe a radiant would be better, because I do like my current ring, just..shrinkage!

Has anyone upgraded to an emerald cut and missed the sparkle? Or felt like the you don’t get the size bang for the buck?

Is 3.4ct to a 6ct a big enough difference for me to really appreciate if I go from a radiant to en emerald? Will a radiant seem bigger?

I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences!

Large carat emerald cuts are beautiful! They really highlight the stone's color and clarity, and offer a different experience than a radiant or brilliant cut.

One way to cure DSS is to not wear your engagement ring for a few days. Wear a 5 or 7 stone as an "alternate" ring. Then when you wear your engagement ring again it will seem huge!

Both radiants & EC’s are fancy cut diamonds. Neither of them face up larger than the other, compared to rounds.
I’m biased; 100% step cut girl ALL. THE. WAY.
You’ve always worn a brilliant cut stone. I have no doubt you will notice a HUGE difference between what you had and what you will have, if you switch to a step cut, regardless of size. They just perform differently & have polar opposite personalities.
You should purchase a large CZ/Moissey EC and wear that for a while to see if you even like the difference, before choosing a 6ct diamond.
You’ll know rather quickly which cut to choose.

For 6 cts, I would go for an emerald cut!

Definitely!!!!!

Though since emerald cuts show body color and inclusions more, the budget may bump it down to a little tiny 5 carat. :cry2:

What color are you thinking? An emerald will show more body color and even more in a stone of that size. Something to think about....

Re:size, see if your jeweler can find a stone that's not cut too deep and also performs beautifully. That way the length and width measurements are bigger and will look larger.

I have seen a few emerald cuts with depths of 60% to 63% that looks like a 4ish carat (I was looking at 3 carats) and also stunningly beautiful. Um, 3.5 carats that looks like a 4ish carat? Yes please!

Most emerald cuts are cut pretty deep (I.e. More carat weight is at the bottom of the stone) and thus face up smaller, but ECs are not about the numbers, as many on this site, as well as one of the vendors here @Rockdiamond (also a fellow EC lover) can attest to.

It's really about getting a jeweler with a good eye who can pick well performing stones for you.

I agree with this - I often prefer slightly shallower emeralds, between 62-65% depth.

Thank you for all your comments!

My Current e-ring is an upgrade from my original, which was round brilliant 1ct F VS1. I prefer the better color of that and other jewelry I wear, so for the new stone I want:

Radiant G or F color. Vs1 or better
Emerald F or E color. Vs1 minimum, but preferably vvs

I have always LOVED big emeralds, but when I compare two stones that are roughly the same price point it feels like I get more bang for my buck with a radiant. Like a 5.5ct emerald and a 6ct radiant with dimensions differing by 0.5mm. Maybe I’m getting bogged down in the numbers and just need to focus on which stone I like best.

Thank you so much for the tip about the website where you enter the dimensions and your finger size. That is super helpful for seeing the size difference!!!

Personally, I have never like the crushed ice look of radiants, so an EC would be my choice.

However, it is OP's own preferences that count!

DK :))

While I agree with Serg that usually a radiant will have more surface area that an emerald cut of the same weight, the key word for me is “usually”. We’re talking about large, rare diamonds. So for any given buyer, or given stone , usually don’t count:)
I’ve seen amazing large emerald cut with depths in the low ‘60’s that had great spread and amazing light performance. They are rare but they do exist

Rectangular & very large for its eight carats www Then, the most beautiful, huge rectangular step cut I have seen on offer for years is on the same Instagram page, from last October or so just over 50% deep & it does work, a miniature of a named stone then on the market.

digressing

(perfect color, that! - just what I need)

I’m the rare that would go for the scintillation of the radiant. Imagine all the sparkle from that giant!

Look for both and you will find that there will be a stone that 'sings' to you.

Yes, you hit the nail on the proverbial head. Get the stone you LOVE best. And it sounds like that big emerald might be it.

Remember getting most bang for your buck is only relevant when you are getting what you LOVE and adore and want. And what we think makes no difference at all. But fwiw I would get the 6 carat emerald cut if I loved it IRL. Emeraldlicious.

Off the cuff: most colored diamonds are cushions and radiants for how well these related cuts prop up colour, there are hardly any step cut coloreds, and even the few that do exist are heavily modified to hold colour; yet, step cuts are reputed to be no good beyond F

Seeing is believing, there will never be too many choices in this weight range, but if you just want to get an impression of cut from pictures, any weight is good - they look the same in the shots, & in macro photography, diamonds around two carats already show too much color - not unlike much larger stoens do IRL.

ctd. I am not seeing any interesting stone over 5 carats & reasonable, except light yellows; I will miss this one for a long time www
