On the Discovery Network, there is a new show called "Final Offer" where people try to sell their goods to four dealers.

Here's an excerpt. It had a GIA report indicating no heat, and it was Kashmir origin. I personally would want to buy it unset because damage should be evaluated under the bezel. It ended up selling for $200,000, but one dealer said he would offer her $350,000, but she didn't know, and took the first offer. Ouch!!

Thought you'd like to see. Check for repeats on television so you can see the whole segment.

ETA: Sorry I misspelled Kashmir in the title.

Oh no, she lost out on $150,000?! I couldn't bear to watch that. Ugh!

Ouch, certainly looks like it has nice color!

The dealer that wanted to buy it for $350,000 said he could easily make a huge profit in the Chinese market.

Yup, IMO it's one of those pieces that should have gone to an auction house in NY/HK and not a TV show. :nono:

Yup, agree. Should have gone to an auction house. Maybe they thought they could get the same without paying buyer's premium. Ooof, too bad about the 150K! Also feel like you do, TL, I'd want to see it unset.

Never heard of that show, will look it up.

Beautiful stone! For something that big and with the origin, it should have gotten more on the auction block.

Why in the world didn't her husband - a diamond dealer, according to the segment linked - sell that stone himself or arrange for an auction? Having his inexperienced wife go on a tv show to sell it seems like a recipe for disaster. A $150k disaster, at the very least. Call me a cynic, but I am going to guess that this was staged.

The stone is gorgeous, though. The glow! And well cut, too. I can only hope the new owner will get it reset.

I thought the same thing as you, and I couldn't figure that one out. I wouldn't be shocked if it was staged.

If it was released from that tawdry ring and put on auction at Sothbey's or Christie's what do y'all think it would have sold for?

So when you think staged, which makes perfect sense to me, do you think staged for a new tv show to help with ratings? Not to be obtuse, but what other reasons would they have for staging it? An acting career she wants and therefore looking for screen time?

I'm just puzzled

What are top large Kashmirs going for these days? $100K/ct? I'm not sure. Last I heard, it was $60K/ct, and that was 15 years ago. I don't know if this is top, but a report written up by Chris Smith to accompany the sale, speaking to the rarity, origin and how fabulous this stone is, would really jack up the price.

The GIA report mentions nothing of the quality of the stone.

I will say that color sure did seem very nice....[whistles]

I thought I saw some white in that stone in the corner and on the report, but that could be some zoning, or inclusions, but not sure. For that kind of $$$$$$, I'd really want to know everything there is to know about that gem, and not just color, although the color did seem delicious. But that's just me.

To generate ratings for the show. People like schadenfreude - seeing someone sell for a lot less than it was worth or a dealer over paying for an item. If everyone who goes on the show shows their item, negotiates a fair price and everyone is satisfied, pretty soon the audience is going to be bored. It needs something to spice it up. Not one of our nicer traits as far as psychology goes but TV does seem to know how to explore it.

Do you know how easily I found her husbands website and company just from watching the first bit of the clip? About 45 seconds.

Exposure is exposure

omg....what a fabulous story. im jealous of the stone AND the condo.

That's funny - I was flipping stations last night before going to bed and saw that part of the show. I wondered at the time if any PSers were watching  The color on that stone WAS amazing!

So what is the origin of the stone? And what do you think its worth if its not a Kashmir? It is still a beautiful, vivid stone.

I think a stone with that provenance and price tag should come with multiple reports.

Is this the case of GIA making another big mistake? I do agree though that a stone of very high value should have 2 reports.
