My general rule of thumb - less than a ct, 4 prongs; more than 2 cts, 6 prongs or more. Between 1 and 2? As you like, aesthetically.

But with something as large as you're considering - I'd definitely go with 8, even if it's 4 pairs of prongs.

I think on a stone this size, definitely 8. But i also like 8 prongs on smaller stones than this as long as the prongs are very delicate. I've come, over time, to dislike 4 prongs on round stones as I think they look kind of squarish. My 2.2 CT OEC is set with 4 and I don't like it and keep trying to figure out how to reset and I will definitely go with at least 6, but probably 8.

@Tourmaline when do we get details about this holy grail stone that you speak of?:appl:

I don’t like the look of double prongs at all. I’d get a cushion if I wanted that shape. I do like the look of 8 evenly spaced prongs, though.

I used to have an 11.5mm round brilliant diamond and here are two settings it spent time in: 4-prong (shown with my antique cluster ring) and 8-prong (shown with my 7-AVC band).

Within a couple of weeks, I hope!!! I don’t expect anything to go wrong, but I don’t want to jinx it!

8 would look amazing on an 11 mm stone!

My vote remains for 8 prongs but I wanted to add one thought if I may.

I think rules are only good as generalities and it ultimately depends on the stone(s).

My OEC studs are just a bit over 2 carats each and they have 11 (!) prongs. LOL that's right, 11 prongs. And you know what? It works. :)

They are in their original settings. Somehow they knew what they were doing back in the day before all the technology etc changed the jewelry world. But I digress. Just wanted to share my additional thoughts regarding number of prongs.

There really are no hard and fast rules. You have to do what makes sense for you and what you love.

Who woulda thought 11 prongs could work?

I love those settings Missy. They are perfection!
My personal preference would be the more the merrier! I’m having 10 on my antique cushion which is a lot smaller than 11mm.

Those earrings are lovely. I have a ring from my grandmother (it had a smoky quartz in it, which I replaced with a synthetic prettier stone) with 7 prongs.

I love the symmetry of 8 prongs, and I will probably go that way.

I LOOVE your 7 Stone! How wide is the band?

Oh and I have 8 prongs on a 10.5mm stone. Aesthetically I do prefer less prongs but 8 prongs definitley don't look like too much on a 10.5mm round. And for security reasons I do prefer 8 prongs.

Thanks! It’s a bit over 4mm at the top, down to a little less than 3mm at the bottom.

Here is a paper cutout of a picture of the OEC that will be in the new setting.
