8mm round vivid blue sapphire

We are going on vacation next Friday, so as much as i'd like to order stone to check it out we might just have to wait until we get back after xmas. Does anyone think that these online sites will have "lots" of new inventory after the Tuscon show?

Probably new stuff, but definitely not "lots." There is not a lot of blue sapphire out there, so many come back empty handed. In other words, I would definitely not be banking on it. And what there is, seems to get snapped up fairly quickly because demand does not seem to be diminishing at all for blue sapphire.

If you like the GemFix stone you should call Andrew and see if he can work something out due to the timing of your vacation. People looking for nice blue sapphires around here often take 6 months to find "the one", I know you said she isn't in a hurry but given your budget and the scarcity of what you are looking for, it could take you longer.

If I were a betting person, I'd say that the last stone you picked from GemFix is going to be very dark. Don't forget your setting plans for it as well,

Do you mean that a bezel will make a stone look darker? I had heard that. I wasnt sure if thats the case. I'd bet the OP would be interested

Yes it can. The setting encloses the stone much more than other settings so less light gets in. Even if you pierce the basket, the fact of enclosing the stone around the top means that there's less of the surface to attract light. It usually only darkens stones by a shade or two BUT if the stone you start with is dark, then this can be more profound.

Good point, that is something to consider. We have opened a dialog with a handful of vendors to see whats out there. I'll post pics as I get them, see what everyone thinks.

I know we are still talking sapphire, but I was going to say you should look at ritani, they do a plain shank bezel halo with a completely open undercarriage. Now that wont let in a TONS of light because I mean, how much light gets under the halo... but still, means theres nothing blocking the sapphire besides the bezel halo.

PLUS.. ive had the setting and the quality is amazing.

Tomorrow we have an appointment with jeweler and he has a wax model as well as a few sapphires to check out. Hopefully I can take some pics and post here.

Remember, unless he has certified stones, his sapphires could be beryllium treated to flux filled or lead glass, or whatever. Those sapphires are on ebay all the time for $5.

Did you look at this one? Untreated, and this is the guy I got my sapphire from:

nice find, iLander!

Well he had 3 really nice choices 2 were dark and 1 was cornflower, cornflower was the winner. The jeweler seems to have a pretty good reputation, and even though the stone isnt certified, she liked it and he offered to send it off if we wanted. I feel everything is on the up and up, but as you said you never know. Bought and paid for, picking up after vacation, Dec 26. I'll post pics later.

glad you found something she liked!
does that mean you did have him go ahead and have him send it off?
have a great vacation and look forward to seeing pictures when you return.

Sounds like it is a done deal and am looking forward to seeing pictures of your new sapphire.

Wow, good for you! Will setting wait until you have it hand? Will be looking forward to photos as well. And Landshark, shame on you for not taking pics for us in the store. :nono:
