I just received a ring I ordered online with a 0.9 carat round diamond. Here's the specs:

round brilliant
6.21-6.24 x 3.82 mm
0.90 carat
Color E
VVS2
Cut - excellent
polish - excellent
symmetry - excellent
fluorescence - none

Depth - 61.4%
Table - 57%
Crown - 34.5 degrees
Pavilion - 41.0 degrees
Culet - none
Girdle - Medium - slightly thick (faceted) 3.5%

In the right lighting, it's blindingly white, good sparkle. I have no complaints of the quality of the stone.

My only concern is it looks smaller than I was expecting. It looks similar to the 0.7 carat rings I was looking at before.

Does anyone think the diameter seems kind of small for a 0.9 carat? Should I return it for a different diamond of same weight, or is this a pretty typical diameter for a .9 carat stone?

Thanks in advance.

Nope. It's right on.

This stone doesn't compare to the cut of your stone, but the size is a good example. Your stone is a 1.9 on the HCA so I think it's still a good looking stone based on the number. An E VVS2 is a bit rich for me (meaning I wouldn't pay for that when you can get a bigger stone G VS1/SI1 for less).

What's your budget and what size were you hoping for? I'm guessing those .70 stones were shallow and had large tables...

No- around 6.25 is about right for a .9. A .7 size stone would be under 6mm, a full carat in the 6.4-6.5mm range.

What kind of setting is it in? That can sometimes affect the appearance of the size.

Numbers are great. You can return it and get a 1 ct or bigger if you drop color and clarity

Exactly! I would do G-H VS2 and go larger, for sure.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

My budget's around 10k. I was hoping for something around 1 ct. but was kind of flexible on the size so I could go high on cut, color and clarity (on the advice of some stores I had been looking at. But they didn't specify how high to go so maybe I overdid it).

I think the setting might have a lot to do with it. It's in a four-prong, which kind of makes it look square-ish sometimes. And it's on a half eternity band so the smaller diamonds on the band might take away from making the center diamond "pop".

Thanks everyone for the assurance though. It's probably just my mind playing tricks on me. I'm sure seeing great close up pics of some very impressive diamonds on here didn't help either.

Are you open to other options?? You can get more than what you want for sure, and we can help you find it! Is 10k just for the stone or for the entire ring?

I'm open to other options (but I'm really itching to propose to my girlfriend soon, to be honest. Plus I did a bonehead move and jumped the gun and showed my friends and family and her family the ring already, so I'm pretty sure they're all expecting me to propose pretty soon too). I was hoping around 10k for the entire ring. Thanks for your help!

Can you return it? Here's what I was thinking...JA offers a 5% discount for pricescope members on diamonds which would bring this to $8,250, if you like it put it on hold. The idealscope is already attached since it's a hearts and arrows stone and it looks great! If you want something bigger, you don't have to have a hearts and arrows stone, but can get something that's ideal. I'll post one of those too.:

Just wanted to say thanks again. I'm gonna take some time and look at those links.

I too have a .90. Mount it in a 6 prong setting, it'll look bigger and less square! The 6 prongs emphasize the roundness.
