A big fat amethyst pear

I need to share this, because it is so cool.
I found this big amethyst pear in an antique mall mixed in with costume jewelry and some gemstone strands.

It weighs 26.5 carats.







I'm thinking of making a pendant setting like this one. I would use sterling wire to do this.

When you mentioned wire wrapping, I immediately thought of Hemmerle and the interesting things they do with wire. I appreciate it’s not to everyone’s taste but I find it simply sublime!

And of course, there is always Verdura’s wire wrapped heart as inspiration too…

When you mentioned wire wrapping, I immediately thought of Hemmerle and the interesting things they do with wire. I appreciate it’s not to everyone’s taste but I find it simply sublime!

And of course, there is always Verdura’s wire wrapped heart as inspiration too…

I was going to make a basket setting, just like the one I showed above. That would require some soldering, but I've done settings like this before.

I love Verdura. Such luxury. Their take on wire wrapping is amazing.

I envy you your jewellery making skill. If I had come by a stone like that, I'd have had to go to a jeweller, order a custom setting, pay a heap of money and wait. But you can get some silver wire and sheet and just do it. It's wonderful!

I was never gonna find a pre-made basket setting to fit this chubby pear, so I had to make one.

I won't lie, it was a bit tricky.
I used tiny pallions of solder in those joints.
It's easy to apply too much heat and warp the wire, so I was extra careful.

Gorgeous! It’s a very simple design but you executed it with care and the result is obviously high quality. I like the little details, like the angle on the end wires and the pinch at the point of the basket.
