#JOTW A Bit of Holiday Cheer-My Emerald and OEC Dinner Ring

I love this! It looks gorgeous on your hand and I'm glad you were impulsive through a difficult time. I hope it gives you joy to look at your hand.

I have spent the last few months seeking out old cut diamonds wherever I could find them-from New England antique stores to the NY Jewelry and Watch Show. As luck would have it, I found out about a local auction the same week that I got some bad news about my father and my brother in law. This ring caught my eye at the preview and I impulsively bid on it. Now this beauty is mine.

The ring has an Edwardian look to me, but the auction house describes her as Art Deco. The jewelry specialist dates the platinum setting as somewhere between 1915 and 1920. Although there is evidence of platinum being used as early as the Victorian era, I was told that platinum settings are typically categorized as Art Deco. The natural emerald is 7.5 mm x 5.5 mm with another estimated 2.25 carats of old European cut diamonds. I suspect that the OECS are early ones-the crowns are high and the culet facets are charmingly off center in many of stones. There’s something so romantic about this ring. I'm smitten with the open filigree design and the hand engraving. She’s not the most costly ring I own, but she may be the most exquisite.

So here she is-my very first emerald ring. I recently read that emeralds are thought to ward off evil and can signify hope. I don’t know if any of this is true, but this ring is sparking joy for me during a difficult time.

(p.s. I have been trying to research the period of this ring. I would appreciate some expert opinions about the setting date etc.)

Wow! Congrats, @lulu_ma. Which auction was this? You’re on a roll with antique jewelry!

How gorgeous!!! Enjoy wearing your new beauty!!!

Really lovely ring and you wear it well. I'd place it as Edwardian. Edwardian and the tiny slice of time of belle epoque are my personal favorites.

@elizat I was so hoping you would weigh in-thank you! I'm glad to hear that you think it's Edwardian. Eventually, I'd like to build a small collection of rings from different eras.
