A Blingy Thanksgiving Story

Almost exactly a year ago, my amazing fiance proposed in a perfectly thoughtful and romantic way. Six months later, he bought me an upgrade when I lusted after a JbEG OEC:

Over post-Thanksgiving brunch, my mother told me the story of how she got her first engagement ring, after she was already married to my father. Both my parents are immigrants from China. They lived apart for 3 years while my dad worked to save up money and my mom was living in an NYC Queens apartment by herself taking care of two babies with barely a word of English in her vocabulary. He didn't have enough money for anything except a plain jade band as my mother's wedding ring. One day, my dad was walking out of work one night and found something glistening on the walkway, he picked up it and realized it was a stone. He wasn't sure if it was real, but brought it to my mom and together they took it to a jeweler and it was confirmed to be a real diamond. It is an antique cut, I think early OEC, and I'm guessing somewhere in the 80pt range, I-K color range. At that time, it was worth $3000. My mother and father thought this to be some kind of blessing that a hard working, dedicated couple would be blessed with such a treasure. My mom set it and wore it for almost 7 years:

when my dad had enough money to get her a diamond with his hard earned money, he bought her a 1 carat D-VVS1 marquise cut. We pulled out both her rings, plus my engagement ring, plus my sister's old engagement ring (she is in the process of a divorce), cleaned them up pretty and had a nice photo shoot:

From top to bottom:
1. my mom's antique cut in white gold
2. my sister's 1.00ct H-VS2 RB in white gold
3. my 2.49 L OEC in platinum

2. my sister's RB
3. my mom's antique cut

I wanted to share my story because after hearing my mom's story of how she got her first engagement ring, I became more grateful for my ring and how happy my fiance wants to make me by giving me a ring I love. There were so many times where I got caught up in the game, wishing I had that 3ct or that amazing setting, when I had something so beautiful and perfect right in front of me. My mom's story reminded me of how beautiful it can be to feel so unbelievably blessed with a lucky find on the sidewalk. Even though my mom wears her marquise everyday, she still keeps her antique cut close by. She offered to give me her marquise, but I told her I wanted the antique cut, because the story is so much more beautiful than her perfect marquise.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

That IS a beautiful story!!!! And I love all of your rings, all of them look amazing!!!!

Thanks for sharing your heartwarming story. We get so jaded here at times I think - bigger, better, blingier - that we lose sight of the thought and love and sacrifice that goes into many ering purchases. I've traded stones several times but I try to be very mindful of how fortunate I am to have what I have! Thanks again for the reminder!

Beautiful rings and cool story!

I have to ask, did they try to find out who the stone belonged to first though?

I know - I was thinking the same; happy your parents found it, but feel badly for those who lost it.

Oh, of course (I asked this too)! When my dad found it, it was when he closed the restaurant at 2AM, but he held on to it to see if anyone claimed it. at that time he only saw my mom once a week on his day off, so it was about a week before he decided to show my mom. This was also why my parents felt it was a blessing.

Hi Sweetpea, I was visualizing your Dad getting off work in the middle of the night after a long exhausting 10 hours on his feet. Don't ask me how, but I had a gut feeling he worked in a restaurant, and was walking home in a dead quiet street with only the street lamps lighting the way, to notice a little sparkle on the ground in front of him. Then he stoops down to see what it was, and sees this shiny little rock. I LOVE your story and what finding that little rock at that exact time in their lives meant to them. I love that it has been treasured for years and I sure hope that OEC gets passed down to a granddaughter who will learn what it meant to her hardworking immigrant grandparents.

Congratulations on the wonderful collection your family has amassed, but more importantly, what it all means to you and symbolizes in your lives.

Omgosh sweetpea that is the most adorable story ever!! What a great way (and perfect timing too) to be reminded to be thankful for our loved ones around us, hard work, and the occasional good luck! Beautiful rings.

What a beautiful collection of bling! :appl: I love the story too…TBH i really think it would have been impossible to track down the original owner, I'm very glad the stone found a loving home where it's been treasured and appreciated all these years!

This is such a lovely story. And I love that the little oec went on to tell a further tale. If only it could talk :))

A very sweet story! :appl: Beautiful rings!

A lovely story - and a wonderful reminder to me of how lucky I am as well!

A beautiful story, I just love it when good things happen to good people!! Gorgeous rings too!!

Thanks for sharing this beautiful story and the pics of equally gorgeous rings

Awe...What a wonderful story behind your mom's ring and the diamond being a gift from the universe, almost like a 'reward' or 'thankyou' for the hard work and dedication your parents gave to you, each other and the new country they were living in!! That is so wonderful and thank you SW&BC for sharing that!!!

I'm also someone who lusts after all of the gorgeous beauties we share w each other here on PS, but your realization of how you now appreciate your own stone in your ER so much more, is exactly how I feel when I look at what I own. Again, thank you for sharing that and helping *ME* appreciate my stuff, too! :halo:

Thank you all so much for the beautiful comments. The ring is going to be a daily reminder of my parents' hard work, they still work 6-7 days per week! My fiance actually became very intrigued, perhaps, jealous? by it when he saw me wearing it as a RHR, he INSISTED on knowing why I was wearing another diamond ring.

That's a beautiful story and I think I like the diamond your dad found best. They are all beautiful but that story brought a few tears to my eyes. Thank you for sharing it!

You guys are one lucky family! Those are beauties!

Beautiful eye candy Sweetpea & a very sweet story :appl: Such lovely rings!
