Almost exactly a year ago, my amazing fiance proposed in a perfectly thoughtful and romantic way. Six months later, he bought me an upgrade when I lusted after a JbEG OEC:
Over post-Thanksgiving brunch, my mother told me the story of how she got her first engagement ring, after she was already married to my father. Both my parents are immigrants from China. They lived apart for 3 years while my dad worked to save up money and my mom was living in an NYC Queens apartment by herself taking care of two babies with barely a word of English in her vocabulary. He didn't have enough money for anything except a plain jade band as my mother's wedding ring. One day, my dad was walking out of work one night and found something glistening on the walkway, he picked up it and realized it was a stone. He wasn't sure if it was real, but brought it to my mom and together they took it to a jeweler and it was confirmed to be a real diamond. It is an antique cut, I think early OEC, and I'm guessing somewhere in the 80pt range, I-K color range. At that time, it was worth $3000. My mother and father thought this to be some kind of blessing that a hard working, dedicated couple would be blessed with such a treasure. My mom set it and wore it for almost 7 years:
when my dad had enough money to get her a diamond with his hard earned money, he bought her a 1 carat D-VVS1 marquise cut. We pulled out both her rings, plus my engagement ring, plus my sister's old engagement ring (she is in the process of a divorce), cleaned them up pretty and had a nice photo shoot:
From top to bottom:
1. my mom's antique cut in white gold
2. my sister's 1.00ct H-VS2 RB in white gold
3. my 2.49 L OEC in platinum
From top to bottom:
1. my mom's 1.01ct D-VVS1 marquise in white gold
2. my sister's RB
3. my mom's antique cut
I wanted to share my story because after hearing my mom's story of how she got her first engagement ring, I became more grateful for my ring and how happy my fiance wants to make me by giving me a ring I love. There were so many times where I got caught up in the game, wishing I had that 3ct or that amazing setting, when I had something so beautiful and perfect right in front of me. My mom's story reminded me of how beautiful it can be to feel so unbelievably blessed with a lucky find on the sidewalk. Even though my mom wears her marquise everyday, she still keeps her antique cut close by. She offered to give me her marquise, but I told her I wanted the antique cut, because the story is so much more beautiful than her perfect marquise.
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!
