A Camera Thread: What is the Best Prosumer Point and Shoot?

Re: A Camera Thread: What is the Best Prosumer Point and Sho

Thanks yssie and BEG. What I need really is a tripod and good light.

We have plunged into darkness in the UK and daylight is pretty weak now. Is there any sort of indoor light that diamonds can be photographed in, without any fancy equipment?

I'm certainly not doing something right!

Re: A Camera Thread: What is the Best Prosumer Point and Sho

Soooo....I may have made an impulsive purchase (because that's how I am ). I may have bought a G11 last night :P

I will post my thoughts when I get it!

Re: A Camera Thread: What is the Best Prosumer Point and Sho

Even though it might not have been right for me the G11 is one terrific camera and I'll bet you are going to love it BEG! Let us know what you think.

Re: A Camera Thread: What is the Best Prosumer Point and Sho

ohh please post your thoughts when you get it!

I've heard so much about it - like sundial, may not be right for me right now, but I'd love to hear what you think!

Ooooh <- insert envious face here

I hope you LOVE it and look forward to hearing your comments. :)

Re: A Camera Thread: What is the Best Prosumer Point and Sho

Yes, let us know! I've been looking for a new point and shoot camera. The G11 is a bit larger than a point and shoot, right? Trying to figure out if I'm thinking of the right camera.

Re: A Camera Thread: What is the Best Prosumer Point and Sho

Glad you bought the G series...it's next on my list when my P&S craps out. I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on it!

Re: A Camera Thread: What is the Best Prosumer Point and Sho

I hope I get it soon - will definitely update. I think I won't mind the size too much (Autumn - yup it's kind of halfway between a P&S compact and a DSLR in size) as long as it's definitely smaller than my DSLR (thank goodness for purses). But we'll see! :)

Re: A Camera Thread: What is the Best Prosumer Point and Sho

Yay, glad you got a camera! I just got the S95 tonight, lol. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the G - any particular reason you went for the G11 instead of the G12?

Price actually! My G11 is lightly used and $350. I couldn't find good used G12s for $400 and I don't need the 720p video recording, which seems to be the major difference between the G11 and the G12 :P I cheaped out a bit

Ooh how do you like the S95??

You didn't cheap out at all - why pay for features you won't use? You got an awesome deal on a G11, and you should be able to get really tight, close jewelry shots (or kitty shots!). DH snagged the S95 last night to try out the video (which he is impressed with so far), but I should be able to get some alone time with it today while he's at work, lol. I'll keep you posted....

Re: A Camera Thread: What is the Best Prosumer Point and Sho

My G11 is here!

Sadly, I didn't get it until it was too late to do good test shots - it gets so dark so quickly - but I love the low-light shots indoors that I took. The camera responds really well, really fast shutter speed compared to my Olympus point and shoot, but definitely bigger than the P&S (and that Olympus is on the slightly bigger side of compact P&S cameras out there, partially because it has a 10x zoom I think). However, it's not nearly as big or clunky as I feared it would be (however, I know that's a personal preference/tolerance issue too). I suck at comparison shots for cameras - I don't know enough about it and lighting conditions to put up test pics (though I will take pics of my mom's new diamond leverbacks and that small diamond halo I never got around to creating a thread for tomorrow, using the G11). In the meantime, I lined up my three cameras and took some really crappy photos of them with my iPhone (seriously, bad lighting - sorry!) to give you guys an idea of size.

The cameras in this photoshoot are:

Left: Canon Rebel XSi, with the standard 18-55mm kit lens
Middle: Canon G11
Right: Olympus Stylus 9000

I didn't know how I felt about the display that swings out at first, but after a bit of time I grew to like it. I don't like using camera cases when I'm actually using the camera because it takes time to get it out, and the swing-out display will protect the screen from stuff in my purse when I throw it in there.

I attached the wrist strap from my Stylus to the G11 - the G11 is light enough that I can use it with the wriststrap, and I hate neckstraps anyway.

Ok, will update tomorrow!

Re: A Camera Thread: What is the Best Prosumer Point and Sho

Well the G11 looks pretty small in comparison to your Canon DSLR! I think it seemed huge to me because I was used to compact point and shoot cameras. The articulating LCD screen is a great feature and something I missed when I switched to the S95. Congratulations on your choice and happy shooting!!!

Cellentani let us know how you like your S95. I have been really happy with this camera.

Re: A Camera Thread: What is the Best Prosumer Point and Sho

I'm looking forward to seeing some of your shots with it! Sorry I somehow missed this thread, but I think you picked a winner, anyway.

I plan to get the Canon PowerShot SX200 IS when I have the cash, strictly for macro. Look at what it can do!

Re: A Camera Thread: What is the Best Prosumer Point and Sho

BEG - it looks so much more petite in your pictures ::) Definitely a big diff from your DSLR!! I'm looking forward to hearing what you think of the photos.

MP - that is an awesome pic :sun:
