I just received this little guy yesterday. It's a slightly over half carat Russian demantoid. It's only 4.8mm but the color is very pleasing. When I only own a few Namibian demantoids I could never imagine a demantoid this green and lively!

I like this green color, even better than the tsavorites green to me. Without the darkness, quite powerful and energetic.
Now the problem is how to set such a small stone? 4.8mm so I don't want any part of it to be covered ;(

And what color gold to go with it?

Oh wow...this is so beautiful!! (I've long wanted something similar but don't know if/when it will happen...). I just really wanted to say how lovely I think it is!

As far as setting it, I love demantoids in yellow gold. Although I do have a pair of Namibian demantoid earrings set in green gold that I really like. They're much paler green than your little Russian though so I don't know that green gold would be a great choice for this, but I'm just throwing it out there.

I'm not sure about the setting style. If it were me I'd probably go with a simple prong solitaire but that's bc I like little stacker type rings. Maybe a halo if you want more coverage?

I have to say I think I might even agree with you - I love tsavs, but I think I like that green even better than tsavs. Care to share where you acquired it? ;)

Very very pretty. I think you could go with any colour gold but yellow would compliment the stone best I think. For a small stone I always prefer to put them in pendants. I recently saw a lovely spikey pendant that simply had one gemstone set into it and it looked fabulous (imagine twigs of metal with a gem set between two twigs).

Beautiful! And 4.8mm is a very respectable size for that material. Definitely needs yellow gold...

Gasp! That looks practically neony! I've never been too interested in demantoid because most of what I've seen has been on the greyish side compared to good tsavorite, emerald, or the best green tourmaline - but this I wouldn't be able to pass up on!

Thank you all for the kind words, I definitely agree yellow would compliment this stone. I am just a little concerned since I want a larger coverage, and that means not a simple solitare or bezel. Would that be too much yellow and kinda cheesy? TIA if anyone have dementoid ring pictures on your hard drive that you can throw here! Much appreciated.

I've photoshoped it on two semi mount settings. Not doing it for me though, desperately need antique looking designs....

I'd go with single cut diamonds for the halo. Let a little metal show on the inside, between the halo and the Demantoid. Essentially treat the Demantoid as a 5mm stone, that would require 8 2mm single cut diamonds. Plain tapered shank too.

That stone is so beautiful, I'd keep the setting simple, so the viewers focus is immediately drawn to the stone itself and not random parts of a busy setting.

I think you have good taste, I like your PT and opal ring. It's a wonderful combo.
I googled and found a few that I like at first glance.

I like the top right ring that Kismet own, but I don't have detail pics

And another two googled rings as options.

The first photo in that last post is a PSer's hand! That three stone with the pave on top and bottom is a Leon!

Gorgeous color! Have you thought about rose gold? Any color you choose is going to look fine I think - it just needs to be a backdrop for the stone!

That color just took my breath away! Love it and can't wait to see how you set it! :lickout:

Yes, that's Kismet's picture. eagle eye :)

I'm leaning on the first white gold halo with twisted shank and the second yellow gold antique ring.
I like how feminine the first one is, and how unique the second one is...
And I think what Greg said is a great option too...Couldn't decide.

The point about this ring is the texture on the gold. If a modern smooth style I would imagine it will lose this rough antique feeling.
But is there a jeweler that can make this sort of texture?

Beautiful stone! (and I second the request to share your source, if you're willing!)

Love the color! I'm excited to see what sort of setting you go with!

Lovely!! Its such a gorgeous color. I love it. I really love the high karat gold setting, and the legacy style. I can't wait to see what you chose!

Here's a picture of a Beverly K mount that Pearlman's carries. I may be biased though. My ering, with diamond, is in 18k white gold in this exact setting.

OTL,
My husband had very specific ideas about his wedding band - he wanted kind of beaten up and organic looking, like molten gold on his finger (but less painful, I hope).
Anyway, the texture of his ring is just like that picture and they did it by flaming the ring after finishing the design - I guess instead of a polish on a more typical ring?? I would think any jeweller would be able to do that for you - but in your case, they'd need to do it before they put that beautiful stone in!
Hope that is helpful..

I'd set it in yellow gold which also compliments any colour shifting that demantoids often show.

Thanks so much! That's very nice of you, I will keep that in mind when I do the setting.

Thanks Uppy, I already decided to go with the antique look. But this design is beautiful for a e-ring!

-Katharath and Tara, thanks girls, I'm glad you like it, I'm still hoping to get another larger one from the vendor...I know, I'm so greedy... I should keep him a secret for now.

For anyone who is interested, Litnon specializes in demantoids and often has beautiful subcarat Russian demantoids with excellent color and horsetails. Since he has what appears to be excellent access, I would suggest contacting him to see what others he might have. Also, Russian demantoids under one carat, while not common, do appear from time to time with other vendors such as The Gem Trader. Look for brilliant, grass green stones, preferably with the thread-like, or starburst-like, inclusions - visible with a loupe or otherwise.

ETA: and under one carat, they are not expensive at all...

Yes, I was going to post that I saw Litnon list a very good color one on their website today. 4mm, but great color!
