a friend of mine asked me an unusual question today, and who better than to forward this question onto you guys?!

she wears a 1ct Tiffany round solitare ring and wants an upgrade. she is wondering, if she goes to a private jeweller, can she trade in her 1ct Tiffany diamond for one of his 2-3ct round brilliants, and alter the Tiffany setting so the larger stone can be fitted?

mmm...? what do you guys think? do you reckon a jeweller will do the deed?

I personally think its wrong. It wont seem like a genuine Tiffany anymore??

I'm confused.

The diamond is just a diamond - does Tiffs engrave theirs? Would he even be able to sell a tiffs stone without the setting? I can't see any jeweller doing that - the Tiffany ring, as a composite, is worth quite a bit more than the sum of its parts because of the brand name... take that apart and you're losing the appeal of that image, no? Tiffany diamonds are not special diamonds - they're not marketed to be H&A, extra facets... they're just marketed as special because they're from Tiffany..

If it's a peg head they might be able to fit a new one in the old setting. If it's integrated not a chance - too much size difference. Either way it's no longer a Tiffany, and if she wants the real deal she's better off upgrading with Tiffany.

I agree. I suppose it could be done if the head can be replaced, but I am not sure why she would want to do that?! If she wants to upgrade she is better off doing so with Tiffany.

the tiffany head is integrated and you would not be able to squeeze a 2-3 carat diamond into a ring that was made for a 1 carat. she''d be better off upgrading through Tiffany''s or selling the ring as a completed Tiffany ring and then using the money to start from scratch and buy a 2-3 stone and have it set in a Tiffany Repro setting.

Nope, sorry can''t be done. She would have to trade in the whole thing for a new stone and setting.

Yup, this seems like the way to go if she wants to upgrade.

Perhaps suggest she contact Signed Pieces to inquire about selling her ring

I agree, by breaking-up/cutting-up the Tiffany ring, your friend devalues the piece so much that, even if she COULD do this (both ethically and practically) I see absolutely no advantage.
