I would like to discuss the importance of having a computer monitor that is RGB accurate. I feel this is very important to us gem collectors and photographers. Especially for colored stones!

So many of us look at pictures of gems online before we actually see them in real life. I believe having an accurate monitor is crucial for analyzing future purchases correctly.

Now that I have a more accurate monitor I have noticed so many details both in color and clarity that I never saw before on my old Monitor!

Yes I know no two monitors are the same and yes I know dealers still "manipulate" the photos of their stones, but at least it takes one of the variables out of the equation.

I recently purchased 3 of these ASUS IPS Artist Series Monitors. For the money I couldn't be happier. The difference they have made in my photography and gem analyzing is tremendous.

Maybe you don't feel this is important. If so please share your viewpoint as well!

I think it's good to have some accuracy esp. with the amount of transactions and sales being done online these days in the colored gems department.

It's just to bad I can't see the color silver on my monitor :rodent:

Having an accurate display is extremely important for accurate colors! As a bonus using an accurate display helps reduce eye strain as well.

IMO Apple still sells the best factory calibrated displays. The gap in display quality has narrowed a lot over the years, but in my experience other brands still require a lot of individual calibration. If I'm working with a non-Apple display that I haven't checked for proper calibration, I always revert to the display on the iPhone or iPad to check for colors.

Exactly, I at least want to know that images on my side of the internet are accurate. ;))

The cool thing about the Asus Artist Monitors that I posted is they come pre calibrated to be 100% accurate to Photoshop RGB. Each monitor came with its own calibration chart showing its performance. For $275 each I am blown away. All three match perfectly!

I have worked on the 30 inch dell ultra sharps and my Asus monitors are every bit as nice as the dells. The only thing that matches/beats the Asus Monitors is the old 30" Apple Cinema Monitors that they use to make. Those screens were full on pro..... I miss those days. The new Apple thunderbolt monitors look promising tho! I have not seen one yet in person.

I totally agree thbmok my eyes seem less strained on my new screens.

Having a really good monitor AND accurately calibrated is absolutely critical, even if only browsing gemstone pictures. My old monitor was the pits and didn't display colour well at all....or perhaps that is a good thing because everything didn't look that great and made it easier to hold on to my wallet.

Thanks for the tip Justin! I think I need to go find some and check them out in stores.
