Acorn cut stones - yeah, it's a catchy name but is a flatter crown, lots of weight in the belly stone really a good thing?

Thanks & Hope you all are having a great holiday season.

Deep pavilion, shaped like an acorn. I like the depth of color they provide but have wondered if they're hard to set, being so deep. Doug Menadue does a lot of acorn cuts, like this rubellite, which measures 10.2 x 11.5 -- deeper than across.

Not flat in the crown but may look so due to the unusually deeper pavilion. I think it is a design that will be a challenge to set and wear as the ct weight increases, plus there's a lot of hidden ct weight paid for but unseen.

Ah, that one doesn't have a flat crown. The ones I've seen had a pretty flat crown. Thanks for the photo.

Happy Holidays to you all.

Maybe that's Doug's excellent cutting -- too flat a crown would leave most of the stone unseen, as Chrono said, & a higher crown allows in more light as well as giving additional saturation. Still think they must be hard to set. I've been tempted by a few of Doug's but that keeps me from buying one.

I saw a lot of them in Cambodia at the Zircon market. My friend kept jokingly calling them 'carrots'. I tried to buy the less extreme ones but am still tempted to have some of them re-cut. Best regards, Lee

I imagine setting them ends up looking something like this

Or perhaps treating the acorn cut as a Briolette - I think the opportunity is there for something different. :)

HAPPY NEW YEAR to All!

Jeff, I was thinking the same. The acorn can dangle as an earring with the culet hanging downwards.

I too have been curious about the relative visual benefits of the acorn shape vs. the increased weight involved in cutting the shape. They are certainly pretty to look at in profile.

Look what popped up in one of my feeds today!

Russian FABERGE white guilloche enamel and faceted amethyst egg pendant with gold mounts, workmaster Feodor Afanasiev, St. Petersburg, circa 1900

I actually saw a poster of a lady wearing acorn set dangle earrings this weekend. The top part is very open, unlike the Faberge drop pendant. The gold only covered the top enough to have the prongs going downwards holding the girdle of the acorn, leaving the rest totally open. Yes, the table is covered but you can see the most of the crown. I wish I'd taken a picture of her earrings.

If you google Tamara Comolli, you will see lots of images of her bracelets made with only acorn cut stones! I have been an admirer of her pieces and would love to have one of her bracelets. One can dream, right?

Here is a pic of her lovely colorful bracelet!

PS: Just took a closer look, the stones are not really acorn cut but with similar shape!

Megeve,
Are those cabochon "acorns" or just super high domed cabochons? :)). The bracelet must be quite heavy and noisy from all the stones knocking each other about.

I like the idea of the Fab but not being so closed. I may use that as an inspiration for a pair of earrings, I can see a little filigree work housing the crown and table, a bezel mount on the girdle with the acorn exposed below it then a short chain above the filigree that leads to wire hooks. Now to see if I have a pair with matching acorn bottoms.

Chrono, now I am not so sure. They do look like "acorn" shape cabochons or they may be super high domed cabochons. Whatever, they do look so lovely and beautiful especially when a group of stones bunched together artfully. Like Lee Little observed, the wiring are very fine filigree works. I have seen the sales assistance wearing it and it hardly seems heavy nor was there any loud noise. The sound was more like bracelet with charms attached, gentle noise!

Lee Little, when you are done making this pair of earrings, would you show us a pic of them? I would love to see them! :cheeky:
