Hey everyone,

I could really use your advice and/or recommendations on buying a cushion cut center stone for a rose gold setting. I currently have the following stone (see attached image):

0.72 carat
G color
VVS2 clarity
Table %: 62.00
Depth %: 67.20
Excellent polish
Excellent symmetry
5.50 x 4.72 x 3.17mm (1.17 ratio)

However, as I near the end of my 30-day return policy, I'm beginning to have second thoughts. I would like to have a larger stone instead, and I am willing to compromise on a few of these specs for larger carat weight. Here are some alternate stones I have found, the price differences are negligible, and all are GIA certified:

ALTERNATE 1

1.00 carat
L color
SI1 clarity
Table %: 61.00
Depth %: 61.60
Excellent polish
Very Good symmetry
6.16 x 5.68 x 3.50mm (1.08 ratio)

ALTERNATE 2

1.01 carat
K color
SI2 clarity
Table %: 61.0
Depth %: 65.6
Excellent polish
Very Good symmetry
5.96 x 5.56 x 3.65 (1.07 ratio)

ALTERNATE 3
http://www.brilliance.com/diamonds/...certified-loose-diamond-D12245828#tab-details

0.87 carat
H color
VS1 clarity
Table %: 67 %
Depth %: 58.6 %
Very Good polish
Good symmetry
6.20 x 5.26 x 3.08 mm (1.18 ratio)

Although this is a smaller carat stone, the shallow depth allows for a larger face comparable to a 1-carat stone.

Do you think I should return my stone for one of these three alternates? Will a L-color cushion be too yellow for a rose gold setting? Or will the rose gold setting mask the faint yellow? And am I wrong to compromise on the EX/EX or VVS clarity that I have now?

Any and all insight/advice/recommendations would be hugely appreciated! Thank you in advance!!

Apparently Alternate 3 has been sold :|

My advice is to return that stone immediately because it doesn't look like a particularly good one aside from the high color and clarity issue. You are looking at stones with no pictures and it is impossible to buy a cushion that way. You can look on James Allen, Good Old Gold, and Engagement Rings Direct for cushions as they all provide photos of the stones. As far as I can see, there are a lot more poor cushions out there than good ones, so pictures are essential before ordering a stone. And I would not go below I color in a modern cushion as I believe you will see the tint in the stone. Maybe J but no lower. You can go to VS2 to SI1 in clarity.

Are you open to antique style cushions? I think you can go to J or k color for sure with those and I think they are prettier with rosé gold.

Okay, I am not having much luck in finding antique style cushions at your price point. But I will post some James Allen stones that might warrant further info such as ASET images and asking if they are eyeclean.

I like the 2 I color stones the best. You just need to ask them if they are eyeclean and request ASET images and post them here. Oh, and there are discounts for wire payment and being a pricescope member, so be sure to ask for that. I am on my iPad so the PS discount is not showing up.

Since you are going to set it in rose gold, you could certainly go down in color and go up in size, because once set, a G-colored diamond will no longer look like G.
