advice on a setting for my little diamond?

Hello All,

A family member recently gifted me with an old engagement ring, along with carte blache to do whatever I want to with it. It was purchased in 1972 -- the band is yellow gold and says "orange blossom," and it's very obviously an engagement ring (not being engaged or a huge fan of yellow gold, I don't feel inclined to wear it as-is). The stone is round cut, small (probably about .25), and has a couple of tiny inclusions that aren't visible to the naked eye. I haven't had it appraised because I have no intention of selling it, but it's a pretty little diamond -- if I were to guess, I'd say the worth of the stone itself is probably somewhere between $700-800.

My dilemma: I've never had custom jewelry made (or even purchased fine jewelry) before, and I can't seem to find anyone who will re-set it in my price range -- I'm beginning to wonder if either my price range is unrealistic, or the jewelers I've spoke with are trying to take advantage of the fact that I'm totally green when it comes to this sort of thing.

My hope was that for between $500-$600, I could get a simple white gold setting with a halo of (tiny) sapphires around the diamond, so I can wear it as a birthstone ring. I never expected that I'd end up having to pay more for the setting than the actual diamond is worth -- I've gotten quotes of anywhere between $1,000-2,000. I've gotten a bevy of excuses from the jewelers I've spoken with: some blame the steep price of gold these days; others say they'd have to special order a mold to fit my diamond; yet others claim the setting of the sapphires in the halo would be "labor-intensive."

Is it unreasonable to expect a decent setting for my little quarter carat diamond for $600? Can anyone make any recommendations?

Your expectations are unreasonable for what you want, I'm sorry to say. That's pretty much it. Your budget will not buy you a custom ring for that price. AND you are green. It's both.

The vendor's aren't giving you excuses. They are giving you details that add to their costs which result in the prices they are giving you.

The ring is made of gold. So they explain that the price of gold is high. Not excuse. Fact. Setting pave is the most expensive part of the setting (labor). That's true too. Usually more than the price of the diamonds in halo, let alone sapphires. And it does have to be a custom mold and custom work is expensive, and most stock halos don't accommodate stones smaller than 50 points. Sounds to me like you are working with honest jewelers.

I also doubt a 25 point stone is worth 800 bucks. In fact, if it's a vintage stone with inclusions you are looking at closer to 300 dollars.

You should pay for an appraisal of your stone to know what you have.

I would save up and maybe buy a nice diamond of the same size (probably cost you 300 bucks AT MOST) and similar faceting. And put a sapphire in the center (about 400-1200). Using a stock mold, instead of a custom one will mean the setting will only cost you about 500 bucks.

Yes as Gypsy said unfortunately its not possible to get a custom ring done for your budget. In fact, for what you want, those quotes sound pretty reasonable.

Some vendors can do a Tiffany style DBTY solitaire necklace or bracelet for your budget. This one would be top quality and lovely with a stone that size:

Or you could find a match (try Old World Diamonds) and have a pretty pair of dainty earrings. Basic earring settings would run $100-300.

Personally, I love yellow gold orange blossom rings so I'd wear it with pride on my right hand. But you've got to love it so let us know of you want other setting ideas that would be in budget!

Thanks for the input everyone. I guess I have little more homework to do, and a LOT more money to save up. Sigh.

(@Rosebloom -- part of the reason the ring was gifted to me is because the marriage it preceeded ended in an ugly divorce a long time ago. Call me superstitious, but I'd feel weird wearing it even if yellow gold was my style :)

Again, thank you everyone!

Vendors respected here on PS are selling .25 ct. diamonds for $250, give or take.

Here are a couple of settings that are budget friendly. Unfortunately, they are for diamonds larger than the one you have:

That vendor has quite a few complete rings, some with larger center diamonds than yours, for under $600.

There is a market for vintage Orange Blossom settings. You could ask your local jeweler to -- gently and carefully -- remove the diamond, and then list the empty setting on ebay or on the preloved forum that's available through this site. Depending on the size and condition and design of the setting, you may be able to get $100 or a little more that you could put towards a new setting.

You could try:
David Klass in Los Angeles. Search in the colored gems forum and see if someone has contact info. I believe its'
David Klass Wholesale Jewelry

He was "theelitejeweler" or something on ebay. Might not be selling there now.

or Wink at winkjones.com (He's a dealer for Crafted by Infinity, but does custom and sim work too.,)

or Lord of Gem Rings or one of those other ebay vendors to make a ring.

Or, it might be less expensive to purchase a cultured or natural sapphire and put into a pendant and use your diamond in the bale as an accent.

How about something like this?
This is from BlueNile, but I've also seen them on eBay.
