Hi everyone -

I'm trying to recycle my old jewelry and have a platinum chain that I'd like to make into a small sapphire pendant.
The design is also going to include either one small round diamond (.20ct), or one small cushion diamond (.24ct).

I know many here don't like the Natural Sapphire company, but I'm looking for specific colors and they're the only ones I've found that have the color in the size I want.

This isn't a large purchase, but it's my first step into colored gemstones so hoping for a bit of help.

Here are the links to the the two I'm considering:

First one
Second one

Thoughts?

i personally love the first one, because you don't see chubby pears in that color very often! It looks really clear!

I also much prefer the pear-cut sapphire.

Definitely the pear! No contest. I think heart will look very dark / get lost a bit in a necklace.

For the price, both are sweet and a fair purchase price. I personally prefer the colour and shape of the heart one. Just keep in mind the dimensions, especially the depth. Sapphires are more dense, so less size for the carat compared to diamonds and are usually cut with more “bottom” than diamonds.
So just watch what depth the sapphire has compared to that of the diamond. It would most likely mean the sapphire sits up higher in a setting than the diamond and that fact might interfere with your design idea (s).

Thanks for the responses.

For the second one, do you all think even if it's set in a three prong martini type of setting it would still look darker?

I prefer the heart shape over the pear, but I prefer the pears color if the heart is going to appear darker once set.

My immediate reaction to the photos is that the heart is much darker. I really like the pear.

I don't like either one here. The pear has noticeable gray to me, and the heart has a window. You can probably find better stones from other vendors if you take more time looking.

Yeah…if it had to be these 2, I made my pick…but there are plenty other stones out there!

I ordered the pear. If I don't like it, I can return it.

I'm not a fan of ordering off of insta or overseas.

But hey, if someone sees something in these color ranges please let me know. I'm open to finding something nicer.

I actually like the heart over the pear. The pear has a grey tone to it so I don't like the color so much. The heart is dark though so I certainly wouldn't bezel it.

I want to do a 3 prong setting.
I may order the heart as well and compare.

Not sure why the pear is showing still available though. I ordered it three hours ago. Weird.

What’s your budget @elle_chris ?

Around 500ish. But I want to keep the stone at, or around half a carat.

I'm also not a fan of teal colored sapphires, or ones with too much purple.
I prefer a true Blue and that's what's messing me up here. I can't find a nice cut, with the color and size I want.

Wanted to share this one - it’s got some extinction, but the color is really rich. I got a smaller, similar colored 0.88 carat sapphire from them back in 2020 and was very happy with it.

My photos are obviously not the same sapphire, but hopefully helpful as a reference. I set the sapphire in a semi bezel with a little diamond. It’s a deeper color, but still vibrant. It was a gift for my mother.

OOH, very pretty!

The pic below is what I'd like to do. I added that black outline with the gold middle to show where I'd want the diamond to be placed. The second pic are the stones I'm deciding between.

I'm leaning towards using the antique cushion I have from a stick pin that's been sitting around and doing nothing for years. Or, I may use the earrings and place them both on one side of the sapphire, spaced about an inch apart.

@Cerulean Thanks for the sapphire link. I checked it out and love the color, just not the shape.

Cute idea! What is the mm of these stones?

Are you only after fancy shapes?

With your goal of that large of a size difference visually, I honestly think you'd be happier with a 1+ carat stone. Sapphires face-up smaller than diamonds. It sounds like you might be able to see them IRL, but just food for thought.

Not sure of the MM, but the earrings are .20ct and the cushion is closer to .25ct Guessing the rounds are about 3.5mm? Not sure about the cushion.

Yes, only fancy and only a pear or heart. Prefer hearts for this actually.

I've looked at what the jewelers here have but their inventory is small.
I may have a look next time I'm in the city if I get the chance.
