Hi everyone,
I'm new to PriceScope. I found all the information here so helpful. My DH and I just but a new diamond ring for our 10th Anniversary and I need advise because I'm still debating if I should exchange it for a "hearts and arrows/signature ideal" type of cut.
My stone is a GIA certified RB of 1.40 carat, color I with medium fluorescence, and VS1 clarity. Here are the details:
- Cut Grade: EX
- Polish: EX
- Symmetry: EX
- Fluorescence: Medium Blue

The diamond sparkles beautifully, however, I don't see the hearts and arrows when it's face up and I'm wondering if the diamond may be too deep and/or the table too large.

The proportions are:
- Table: 59%
- Girdle: slightly thick (faceted)4.0%
- Pavilion Depth: 62.6%
- Crown Hight: 14.5%
- Crown angle: 35.0%
- Pavilion angle: 41.4%

Any advise is greatly appreciated as I'm still wondering if I should exchange it for a 1.35 signature ideal (Hearts and Arrows), which is about 1,000 more expensive.

Thank you so much!

Post the exact same info for the new stone to see if it is actually a superior light performing stone before you commit to purchasing it. This stone you have now is pretty poorly cut - it gets a 5.3 on the HCA which is dismal. :blackeye: It faces up small for its size because it is deep, has weak fire, scintillation, and only average light return. You can do much, much better.

Re: Advice Pz: 1.40 brilliant VS1 color I medium fluorescenc

This is not good news :( but I can still return it or exchange it.
Here is the other stone's information:
It's a GIA 1.35 BC stone color I, VS1 clarity with faint fluorescence.
Table: 56%
Table's angle: 34.4%
Pavilion: 61.9%
Girdle: Medium 3.5% faceted
Pavilion's angle: 41.0%

Thanks for the quick response!

Re: Advice Pz: 1.40 brilliant VS1 color I medium fluorescenc

I forgot to mention the crown hight is 15.0%. This stone comes with a GCAL certification that shows the diamond has excellent light return (optical symmetry analysis).

I prefer to go with a smaller diamond and pay the best cut I can afford. I'm not concerned about the color as it looks really colorless. My manager even asked me if it was a D color diamond. I've hear that medium fluorescence actually improves the color in diamonds color I or below. The smaller stone has faint fluorescence so I hope it faces up as white as this one (the 1.40 carat).

I appreciate your help!

Re: Advice Pz: 1.40 brilliant VS1 color I medium fluorescenc

could you return it and search for a stone from on of the PS vendors? Whats your budget for the stone?

Re: Advice Pz: 1.40 brilliant VS1 color I medium fluorescenc

My budget is 9,000 to 10,000 max for the diamond.
The 1.40 carat is around 8,700 and the 1.35 is about 9,700.
I thought that with the excellent cut, polish and symmetry from the GIA would be for sure an ideal cut stone but I guess it's not.

It can be confusing - some GIA XXX stones are the best cuts. Sometimes they are not.

I am in Australia, so it's 1:30 am here. I can't search for stones for you right now, so hopefully someone else looks around for you. Your budget for an ideal cut stone around that size is certainly possible. If no one has posted stones for you when I get up for the day, I'll look around for you and do it. :))

Great. Thanks JustGinger!
I appreciate it. I'm really nervous as this is a huge investment for us. :wink2:

You need to give us the depth and the diameter. The first stone probably has a smaller diameter than it should because it is too deep. In fact, the second stone may not appear smaller than the first depending on it's depth.

I just spent ages put together a post and it got eaten by my phone! I'll post when I get home from work tonight. :))

Re: Advice Pz: 1.40 brilliant VS1 color I medium fluorescenc

I really like the 1.40 carat from James Allen. I notice it is almost as deep as the one I got but the table is smaller.
How do you know it scores better? I'm confused. It's so hard to buy online.

This is the 1.35 one from blue nile.

http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-search?track=NavDiaSea#diamonds_pid=LD02519960

I didn't know White Flash offers an upgrade program where you can exchange your diamond for another one of equal or greater value. Usually you have to spend double of what you paid.

Tomorrow I will attach the GIA certificate of the 1.40 I got.

Thanks for your help!

Attached is the PDF of my GIA 1.40 carat. Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks!

I just posted the actual GIA certificate. I hope it helps. Thank you so much!

Will a 1.3 carat look much smaller than a 1.4?
I've heard a good cut makes it look bigger.

I could not see the actual picture of the second one. I wonder if it is an "eye clean" diamond. I.m hoping to find something as close as a 1.4 as possible.

It's going to take about ten days to get my money back so I'll keep looking for my stone.

I see many people here purchase from WF, JA or BG. Not too many people purchase in BN. I wonder why.

I really appreciate your help.

Thanks!

Not between the 1.4 and the 1.34 from BGD. They're very close in mm size. The WF one though, you'd notice a slight difference. I would say go for the BGD one. It's stunning!

I wish I could see the actual picture. I wonder if I would see the clouds in the stone. Are clouds better flaws than crystals?

Thanks,

Thanks,

If you're interested in the BG stone, reserve it regardless of your refund status. Someone else will grab it in the next 10 days and you'll miss out. Then contact BG to discuss the delay of payment.

Not many people choose to buy from BN because they don't provide the same level of information (in the form of Idealscopes/ASETs/etc) on their stones. People feel more comfortable seeing analytical information on diamonds they're purchasing online, which the big PS-recommended vendors provide. Add in the awesome, personalized customer service and lifetime upgrade/buyback policies and you can see why others are preferred over BN.

That's helpful information JustGinger. How about WhiteFlash? Their upgrade policy says you can exchange it for a stone of equal or greater value… I was blown away.

That their upgrade/exchange policy. Most of our online vendors have that. I would definitely purchase from somewhere where you can see the stone before buying. James Allen recently has a way of viewing stones where they have pictures and certificates but also videos!!! It's awesome, and really the only way I'd recommend buying online. Unless you call someone at GOG like Jonathan to help with the search, or IDJ - Yuki can help. But do research on their trade in/upgrade policies.

The scores were talking about are by using this
https://www.pricescope.com/tools/hca
ideally you want less than 2 :)

A score of 2 or a bit above 2 can be fine, too. Remember, the HCA cannot *see* the stone and should only be used as a rough guide.
