Hi all,

We recently picked out this stone from GOG: 1.7 G SI1 RB H/A AGS 0 GIA ex/ex/ex HCA <2... I really like the stone's personality and how it plays w/ light. It's all eye clean to me, even if I know where the feather is w/ a loupe. Sometimes the G color I can see depending on what the color the walls / surroundings are. That's ok w/ me though, I like that too.

I am wondering about the size though, which is where my question comes in.

It's 7.7 mm. The setting my fiance and I picked out was Victor Canera's Emilya. We loved the pictures on pricescope of everyone's beautiful rings, and especially b/c the ring my fiance proposed with was a smalle promise ring with a little halo and pave band similar to the Emilya style so it's sentimental value is high to us to. And it was the very first setting we looked at (we're in LA so got to meet him) and I fell in love with it in person; pictures are great, but in person... wow!

After I got this stone though and tried it on, I wonder about the size that the halo would add to the stone. I estimate that If 1/2 pointers then that would be 1 mm for the melee and then give about .2 mm extra for metal around the melee. So in total that would be 10.1 mm for halo plus stone. Since the halo is at an angle, the diameter looking down from the top would probably be a little less then that, like about 9.9 mm. I dunno if it would overwhelm or not; I attached some photos of the stone to you can get an idea of my size fingers. I tried on settings in the store about 10mm to see what it'd be like. I felt okaaay. But I don't know if I would start to feel too big wearing it all day and seeing it all the time. I know size is VERY person subjective, but any thoughts on the size being potentially too big or too small are welcome!

I also really like the look of a simple solitaire on a thin 2mm band (like in the photos). Victor's Alaria ring looks beautiful too, with a pave shank, four simple claw prongs, and a diamond pave basket.

So... I have a couple options:

1.) I could request the Emilya with this stone and see what it feels like on the size on my hand. If I love it, great. If it feels uncomfortably big, then I could then request the Alaria setting and either try to sell the Emilya setting or set the Emilya setting with a gemstone and wear as a right hand ring for fancy occasions or when I want to be dressier / more cocktail like.

2.) I could request the Alaria setting knowing that this size stone feels comfortable as a solitaire. If I'm satisfied, great. If I start to covet the Emilya later, I could request it except in a smaller size with a gemstone in the center, feeling confident that with the gemstone as a smaller stone, it will not be too big.

Any thoughts appreciated!

Tough decison! Beautiful diamond, too! What is your finger size?

I'll go ahead and give you my thoughts even though I don't know your ring size yet.

I am sure you know that there are plenty of people on this forum with the Emilya set with 2 and 3 + ct diamonds and they love the size. Although many of them are resets and not first time engagement ring settings. In my little world, I dress very casually most of the time, and a classic thin solitaire suits me best, and I can wear different diamond bands with it it I want. I think that has been the other popular option...the Vatche U-113 Tiffany repro solitaire (mine came from GOG). I can link some threads for you if you have any interest in seeing it. My current diamond is about 7.5mm and I hope to switch to around 7.8mm and that is a comfortable size for me in a solitaire. I wear a Tiffany Legacy wedding band with mine and think most of the Tiffany diamond bands look good with it.

As far as the Alaria goes, I think it is gorgeous! But it limits you on the diamond bands more than the plain solitaire. I think the Alaria is going to look best with it's matching band, and that is certainly a gorgeous wedding set!

So if my only two choices were Emilya and Alaria, I would have to choose Alaria for myself because of my lifestyle. Most people I know have smaller diamonds than I have now, so there's just no way I could swing the 10mm. But you know your world and lifestyle better than anyone, so I think you probably will find that you are more comfortable with one or the other!

Thanks for you reply DS --

My ring size is 4.75... I've attached more photos for real life perspective.

Everything you say makes a lot of sense. It's so hard to know what I'd feel most happy with - Alaria and Emilya and U113 all look like great rings!

Here is a question re: your medium height set U113-- what is highest size of a wedding band that you would be able to wear next to the engagmenet ring?

I have the emilya with a 2ct RB on a size 6 finger if you want to look up pictures for reference. I find it very classic on my hand and not to overwhelming. I think with a 1-7 cushion in an emilya halo that will actually be closer to 9mm so you should be fine. If you look up frankieinTexas her first ring I believe was 2.3 on a size 4.75 hand so that should give you some perspective though hers was an RB so it will face up larger.

Honestly I would stick with the Emilya. If that was the first ring you were drawn too then I think if you look at anything else you will be left comparing it down the road. I will say if you are worried about it looking too TOO much just wear it as a stand alone ring with no wedding band...or a plain wedding band. I feel that makes it a bit more understated.

Hope that helps!

That is a good question! I tried on several Tiffany bands with it and they all worked. I think 2mm high is fine but I didn't try on any really large bands with it. When you wear a large diamond band, you usually have to wear a spacer band in between so the diamonds on the band do not scratch the e-ring. But I found with this diamond and the 7.6mm diamond I had before that anything over 10 point diamonds looked like too much with the e-ring. 10 points or less looked most balanced. I have a band with 10 pointers but I actually liked the Tiffany band with 8 pointers better (.56 ctw).

Here is the thread with the Tiffany pictures that a friend and I took with her phone!

That's a really nice stone & 2 beautiful settings to choose from. What's helped me in the past is getting a super cheap (eg, CZ) replica of the style & size rings that I'm considering & live with them for a few days.

That will give you a real life perspective of what these rings will ultimately look like on your finger & it's helped make my decisions much easier in the past.

Thanks -- what a great idea!!!

Do you (or anyone) happen to know of where one could find a CZ in a halo setting similar to a 10mm Emilya?
