Advice sought: ring shopping in Burlington, VT

We've been married three years and are still searching for the engagement ring. I'm sure changing my mind so often has been no help. However, the main barrier is that we have different approaches. I definitely prefer to build a ring. It's the better way to get the best quality for the most value and least money. I'm defining high quality in terms of cut first, then color, then clarity (totally mind and eye clean). My husband, the more impulsive and laissez-faire of the two of us, wants to stumble on the ring during one of our travels. He doesn’t know about the 4Cs and truthfully has little to no interest in learning. When we first started looking it became clear he wasn't even aware how much a diamond could cost, even a small one.

Recently we came to this compromise: we will try it his way when we go to Burlington for New Year's. We'll visit shops and see if we can't find "the one". This is very romantic on his part and would be a wonderful memory. If we don't find something, we'll do it my way.

However....the practical side of me is trying not to freak out about not knowing enough to make an informed decision. What questions should I be asking to get the best bang for our buck? I definitely would prefer a GIA but if we find something we love and it's not certified, what do I do? What sort of refund policy would be the best help to us? Do I bring a loupe or idealscope with us (I don't have either)? Is it rude or obsessive seeming to use one in the store? What if it turns out to be a fancy shape (I'm partial to an E/W oval or marquise) or an old cut? I'm also concerned the sales person won't be as knowledgeable as so many of the PSers here.

I really want to give his way a sincere go so I'm keeping an open mind and heart. Pricescopers, I really need your help and advice.

Hi Cris,
Here's a the main tip that applies in Vermont- or anyplace else
1) Money Back guarantee- make sure you get one in writing. this will allow you to examine the ring- and get a second opinion if you wish- outside the pressure, and bright lights of the store.
Years ago money back guarantees were a lot more rare in jewelry stores.
With the prominence of internet sales- where money back guarantees are the norm- in some cases the law- store now have had to adjust.

That's really the most important tip I can give. Burlington has a few nice jewelry stores.
Some people feel that you should make up your mind by doing research- but there's something to be said about a romantic impulse buy
Just make sure you have the ability to back out if the romantic plunge takes you to a bad place......

My inital setting and diamond....my upgrade diamond as well was bought in NH (NO SALES TAX!!!) at a place called Day's Jewelers. I believe they are a family owned chain with a few places throughout ME and NH. I believe one of their largest stores is on the ME/ VT border so perhaps you could still go there for a look.

Overall the stores are very nice for B&M. I think the staff are well trained and friendly. They have a LARGE selection of rings at different price points. Their trade up policey is average I believe for the industry. Overall I liked them. I have also worked with about a dozen PS vendors on other projects so pricing is sort of competitve between Days and Online. Though I know if you really look through the PS vendors you can definitely get a much better quality diamond. Still if you have the opportunity I would give them a shot.

Maybe Perrywinkles? A walk down Church Street should be good perusing. I wonder if they have any vintage jewelry stores?

They do have, I think, at least 2 vintage jewelry stores there. I was in Burlington in the spring and stopped into one of the shops. It was very very small, so I would expect inventory to be quite small. At the same time, I bet such a store will have some very charming rings! I would also expect prices to be a bit higher. I'm going to google to see if I can find the name of the one I visited.

ETA: Ahh, this was the exact shop I visited. http://www.vintagejewelers.net/index.html I seem to think there was at least one other, that we drove by, but I never made it to.

If you go to Stowe VT definitely check out Stowe Gems. They have a large selection as well as estate and vintage pieces. I've heard good things about their custom work as well, although I have no personal experience. VT is beautiful in the winter, I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time!

Update: we're in Burlington and we each got what we wanted. The phrase of the day has been "I can't believe it!". The first store we walked into and the first and only setting I tried was a Sholdt semi-bezel look alike. I was so excited I clapped and said "the Sholdt!". The SA didn't know what that was as it appears it was their own custom setting. The kicker is it's about a third of that name brand. Ta Da!

Husband wanted to walk out with either the pre-set white or yellow gold version but I was able to argue that we could find a better value for the stone elsewhere.

So, my friends, could you help a lurker find a round for this setting? In order of priority:

Budget: 11k tops
Carat: 1.2-1.4 if possible
Cut: best
Color: I or better, white facing
Clarity: SI1 or better, especially given the tension setting.

Is this reasonable?

Yes it is very doable- however I recommend starting a new thread so it will get more attention from the diamond hunters on here. I always feel that DS and Gypsy find great diamonds so you might call specifically for them.

Thanks, SarahBear

NP I would look for some for you but I have 2 kids running around since daycare is shut down this week and while I think I can do a good search - I don't ever find those needles in the haystack hat I think others find. Regardles I'm sure PS can lead you towards a beautiful diamond at an excellent price!

Congratulations on finding a beautiful setting that you both like.
Can you post some photos of the setting -- both on and off your finger? That would be helpful.

Lula, I didn't think to take a picture but the store may be helpful there.

Christina- thanks for these and sorry for the late reply (happy new year!). The budget might have a little more room, which is nice. However, I can't see myself wearing a large (1.5 ct) stone, especially in a semi bezel setting that enhances the center's size. I ordered a cz solitaire from overstock to get a feel for things. The center stone in the setting we tried was .7 and I did think I would be happier with more and the design could handle a larger center. Just not sure now what my range is. 1.2-1.4? Sorting that out.

Wanted to clarify that since the budget is a little more, I'd rather move up in color than size, so I'm still thinking in the 1.2-1.4 range.
