Another shot of the same stone.

By the way Deb, I tend to see the the LM setting as old-fashioned with the curved prongs...definitely not modern and fashionable!

That would be tension or the like.

Can I revive interest in this? I want to set a red spinel in a simple, classic setting. I had thought I would flank it with pear shaped dimaond accent stones, but I did that with a tanzanite and do not need to repeat it. (Nor would I *mind* repeating it since the spinel is smaller and would have smaller accent stones.)

I like a very clean, modern look without much metal. I will show you how my solitaire is set so that you can see what I like.

I am offering a red stone (which may be a rhodolite garnet) as the "prize". If no one else is interested in this "contest", even though I haven't decided on a setting, it will go to strmrdr who has been trying hard to help me!!! (You have been a doll, strmrdr!)

Mara,

I see it as old-fashioned, too. But that is all I see in the jeweler's case now, so it must be modern, right? I mean...perhaps the modern look is neo-old-fashioned?

How did I miss this? Nice stone.

Garnets are my wife's birthstone, and she loves those rhodolites, so I'll give it my best shot. She too likes those classic settings, by the way.

AGBF,
While I havent found much a setting that matches your needs what do you think of blue sides?
I think a lighter brighter blue would be awesome with it.
Sapphire would be ok but I think something brighter like blue topaz or blue zircon would look better.

Somethin like this color or even a little lighter.

Josh put together this collage of pictures of my solitaire and its jackets in a *FABULOUS* thread (which we REALLY should unearth and add to). My taste is very minimalist.

I *love* the blue, strmrdr, but I don't think I would like it with my spinel. That color reminds me of the sapphire earrings I have. They are not the color of a "good" sapphire, but are a color *I* love: a blue-grey :-).

Lawgem,

Some of your choices are *perfect*...only not for my stone! My favorite is the first one, which would set off a rectangular stone beautifully. (And I *LOVE* it.) I also love the small diamond between the two slender platinum or white gold strands...but a big spinel would not look the way that diamond does :-(.

If you have time after lunch, think of me ;-).

Deb, appreciative

Okay, I don't remember Lawgem ever posting jewelry pictures before. Guess he really wants that rhodolite!

Sorry AGBF, I've still been too lazy to look very thoroughly.

Oh, and I also think you'd get a ton of responses if you started a thread with "contest" in the title!

Maybe so, Hest, but that wouldn't be very fair. The "prize" is, after all, just a red stone in a *bag* labelled "rhodolite". Not the best of guarantees. (But it *is* pretty, LawGem.)

BTW, is this a stock ring? Could I get one made up with different quality and color diamonds without having to have one handmade? (I am NOT thinking of my red spinel at the moment!)

No idea, though it looks like it. Might just ask them?

Sorry but I can't get the photos resized to attach:

AGBF,

All your hints seem to poin towards one of those "pseudo-tension" rings with some bridge under the stone and the total "tension" look. I would skip a "true tension" for a colored stone, unless I trully know what it is like inside-out. Griffin posted such stuff recently, and there are plenty other such things around.

Here's one bunch of "browsable" options... maybe one of the models on the site will be tempting enough for you.

With the dearth of movement on PS and a boring weekend... got nothing better to do than figure out what this ring is all about

Actually, if you really want a setting even more invisible than your ring, that's a heck of a challenge! I have never seen something so... immaterial as that E-ring! And while thinking how could I peg a bezel to an invisible band like that for my own use, I came to conclude that NO band is going to be more discrete... but the prongs could! Especially from the side, like below. There is no "basket" under the diamond in that setting, and the band ca be made into a knife edge, if you so wish. You can probably see the original design, since it carries a well-known name.

The image attached has been processed to (clumsily) incorporate a red stone instead the original...

Thanks again, everyone! I don't know what I want...exactly...but I know that both LawGem's ring with the periodot and AnA's last ring have elements to them I like a great deal. I think I prefer the small accent stones to a solitaire, but I wouldn't want a space between the side stones and the spinel as the periodot ring shows. I like both bands, the one LawGem posted and the one AnA posted. I am not sure what band lends itself more to an oval with small accent stones. I just wanted to let you know I keep reading your input and appreciate it!

The prize will *BE* the stone that is in a packet labelled, ''Rhodolite 8.65 x 6.75 2.2 ct''.

All I can promise is to award the stone in the bag, not that it actually *IS* a rhodolite garnet with those dimensions. (It looks as if it may be that to me, but I cannot swear to it. I am not a gemologist!)

The stone is pretty and can be set, but it is not of enormous value. I do not recall what I paid for it. Eventually I will post a picture, but if you ''compete'', you are doing so for fun. The prize may not be worth your time. (I was cut out to be a sales woman, right? I do everything I can to discourage a sale!! Maybe that''s why I am a social worker, not a business woman!)

Thanks for any ideas :-).

Eons ago I posted this, "contest". I did not really use any one of the suggestions given by a poster to this thread when I set the stone, but I certainly benefited from everyone''s wisdom when I set it. I did not mean not to reneg on the rhodolite "deal", but I moved from Connecticut (after a lifetime there) and nothing I owned was accessible here in Virginia for quite some time!

Well...I found the stone in a bag LABELLED:
"Rhodolite

8.65 x 6.75

2.2 carat"

I will send the (alleged) rhodolite to the first person who contributed to this thread before today who says s/he would like it.
