I have used photos in gem reports to confirm the color accuracy of a vendors' pic.

Reading an example AGL prestige report, however, I noticed that it says, "The image is for representational purposes only and is not necessarily actual color or size":

I have 2 questions:
1) Under what conditions are these photos taken (e.g. is there a special bulb that is used)?
2) Does anyone have an example of stone they own where the color of the gem in the report is completely _off_ from the stone in hand?

EDIT: For typo.

One thing I know for 100% sure is that any corporate lawyer worth their salary will never allow a lab to issue a report without the statement "The image is for representational purposes only and is not necessarily actual color or size" to cover their behinds for any and all reasons to discourage and prevent real and imagined lawsuits.

+1

Does it say on their website what lighting they use? I suspect that they wouldn't bother because the disclaimer has them covered. I often find that the photo is a good representation and it might be because they don't try to disguise flaws. It's probably easier to take a photo that shows a window than to mask it!

Preg: I remember reading a long discussion somewhere about the lighting used - that it was highly specific and the same exact set up is used for every stone. LD is probably right that its on the website; if not, I'm sure they are asked that all the time and have a prepared response to an email you might send. If you do find out, would you come back and share the info?
