Hi everyone,
I''ve begun a year long process of picking out an engagement ring and am absolutely in love with the diamonds themselves. My girlfriend picked out the setting and now I''ll pick out the rock. I want to know as much as there is to know about diamonds so that when I finally have enough money, I can snag the best bang for my buck.
With that said, I appreciate how enthusiastic all of you are about diamonds. I have been picking from your brains for a while now which has broadened my understanding of them. My problem though is all of the abbreviations you use. I''ve figured out some on my own (ie. RB = round brilliant) but there are still many that you use that is hard for me to figure out. I was hoping if I started this thread, then maybe some of you could help me out and add commonly used abbreviations and acronyms in here so that the other threads would be easier to read. Even if they are abbreviations that seem obvious to you, it might not be to new people so the more the merrier! Thanks for your help.

Hmmm - first one to occur to me is FIC. It means Fiery Ideal Cut ... but it took me a while to figure it out!

Thanks Circe! There''s so many more...some i''m not even sure of! lol

Brick and Mortar???? THAT is what that means!??? That one has always bugged me!

I googled a Brick and Mortar-

A traditional "street-side" business that deals with its customers face to face in an office or store that the business owns or rents. Web-based businesses usually have lower costs and greater flexibility than brick-and-mortar operations.

The local grocery store and the corner bank are examples of "brick and mortar" companies.

Wow. Thank you very much. I''ve tried to read some threads with this information and it all makes more sense now.

Good - between Jelly''s list and the thread, you should have your very own database of all our little sayings and abbrevs!

You might be a PSer if you can read this.

The CA on the DQD for my FI’s 2.00/D.VS1/ACA from WF shows 34.5 with a PA of 40.7 which got an AGS 0 but GIA says it’s only VG even though the LGF is 75. What gives? The SA at the B&M put it in their ASET and the H&A and the optical symmetry looks good but the HCA still gives it only a 2.01/BIC.
23.gif
It looks just like their HOF’s. IS seems ok to me but is it Strmworthy? Should I still get a BS from GoG before I USPS it off to DA and set up with JM before it goes to MWM?

Oh, gawd, I can read this. But, the HCA only goes to the nearest 0.1, not 0.01.

DQD = Diamond Quality Document. It''s the major report from AGS that includes the cut grade. The DQR (Diamond Quality Report) has much of the same information but without the cut grade.

I actually get all the diamond abbreviations (and I could read Neil''s post!!!), probably because I''m an emergency medicine resident, and we write stuff like this:

"The pt is a 65yo male with ESRD 2/2 DMII, who lives at SNF and presented to OSH yesterday with BRBPR x2 days; (-) CP, SOB, LOC"
3.gif

Medicine is the KING of abbreviations!

Ahem...anyway, I do have a real question...I actually don''t get all the family abbreviations. Here''s what I THINK they are:

BF: boyfriend
FI: fiance(e)
DH: ? Dear husband? Dang husband? Dirty Harry?
M(S)IL: Mother (sister) in law

...it''s really DH that bugs me the most...anyone wanna enlighten me?

That''s hilarious. I feel like I''m trying to break some ancient code from a language that is no longer spoken. With all the abbreviations I have so far I was able to figure out most of that sentence. But the ones I still am not sure of is: LGF, BIC, DA, and MWM.
