A friend came with a request for a B-day gemstone so if anyone has some time and wouldn't mind shooting a few suggestions my way it would be much appreciated =) ......

"I'd love to get a ring made that could be worn as a left hand ring / engagement style ring.
I want an antique cushion cut with a high crown and large culet.
(I asked why a large cutlet and she said....."I want an antique cut with the large chunky facets. I want the Maltese cross effect that the culet will cause in the right light , as well.")
It needs to be budget friendly. About $500.
It would need to be strong enough, and a color that would show off the cut. Close to 3 carats.
Do you know anyone I might approach? "

You know this would be a specialty cut so that $500 limit means cutting cost and gem material.(I am double checking to make sure that is for the stone itself and doesn't include the ring, metal, setting, etc.)

Thoughts, ideas, query's?

Isn't Jeff white expensive though?

Correct, which is why I linked the design, but did not recommend him for this project.

Does the $500 including the setting?

And what b-day stone are you looking for?

$500 is for the labor and materials...ie. cutting and rough.
The requirements are simple....the stone needs to be strong enough....so...with a ring we are pushing it at 8 on the hardness scale....and...
"a color that shows off the cut"...which means a lighter toned stone, correct?

Blue topaz, of course, would be a good stone.

I know it is strange. That is why I am asking you."

and then I ask the real experts, here on Pricescope, what the best route to take is :geek: :geek: :geek: :geek: :geek: :ugeek: :wavey: :read: :read: :read:
When it involves anything that has to do with the consumer side of gemstones, the folks on here are hard to beat.

Aww, you know exactly what to say, don'tya Barrett??!! :naughty:

Blue topaz yes, but what about morganite? I haven't been pricing them lately so don't know if I'm whistling in the wind, but it would definitely show off the facet pattern.

Then depending upon how much of a risk taker she is - or er, how edgy or "goth" she is, you can still find some fairly large and cheap spinels in the off colors, like "platinum" or lavender/platinum, even pale pink that you could have recut. As you know, the cool thing about these lighter spinel colors is that since the refraction is so high, they shoot off great multicolor sparks. I'll go look around ebay and see if anything catches my eye.

Tough requirements! She doesn't give you any hints as to color, to make it any easier. What about chrysoberyl? 8.5 & plenty sparkly.

The only candidates for MOH 8 and upwards are corundum, spinel and chrosberyl which are all over budget for 3 carats unless she doesn't mind heavy sapphire treatment, not very saturated spinel and chrysoberyl. I think you'll be very hard pressed to find a neon 3 ct chrysoberyl for under $500. Staying at 7 opens up your options. Aim for a lighter tone to medium light at most to better be able to appreciate the OMC design.

What about trying to find a prettily coloured Malaya garnet then? It would seem the next step down from the top tier stones already mentioned and is hardier than tourmaline in my experience.
