Alzheimer''s Correct Pronounciation

After reading the thread on what bugs you, I decided to ask my fellow PS''ers this question -

How do you pronounce ALZHEIMER''S ??

I have heard many different pronounciations. It bugs me, I think the word is being butchered.

I pronounce it as Alls hi mers

I have heard: All timers

Alls timer

Al''s timeszer

So, how do you pronounce it and just what is correct ??

You''re right, it is "alls-hi-mers." I''ve heard other variations but you''re correct.

I pronounce it the same way you do. but I think it comes out more like: Altz hi mers. the ''alz'' part of the word trips me up at times.

The best one I''ve heard so far was someone pronouncing it very similarly to ''oldtimers'' and not as a joke

Well, certainly all the other pronunciations you put out there are pure butchery. I''ve always said what you do, although I suppose if you wanted to adopt a thick German accent and say it, it would likely be Altz-hi-mers. Of course most people are either too self-conscious to attempt genuine pronunciations of foreign words, or are too lazy to make a decent attempt. (But then I live in the land of "onced" "twiced" "warsh" "rinch" and "nukular" too - maybe other parts of the country are not that way) But what you say will do quite nicely.

I went to training (for work) a week or so ago, and the guy was clearly brilliant in his topic, but not linguistically gifted. He consistently said programically when he should have said programmatically, and would read certain words like "relevant" as revalent. The man was clearly beyond intelligent, so I had to wonder if he was a bit dyslexic.

Oh...and who could forget the time I overhead a couple of older guys talking about their prostRates. (** banging head on desk repeatedly **)


...sorry for the threadjack. That one just really stuck with me as a classic. I recall it every time there is a discussion of mispronunciation of words.

I looked it up on a speaking dictionary. It comes out as Alltz-hi-mers. Somehow there is a "t" sound in there.

OMG!! I''m so excited right now to have realized I''ve been saying it right! It''s one of those words I tend to avoid saying for fear of being outed on incorrect pronunciation

Yup, the German Z is pronounced as TZ, as in Mozart.

I cringe every time I hear an old guy talk about his "prostRate" too!

i work in a nursing home- we always say "Altz''-himers"- as the correct pronunciation is.

however, it drives me crazy when people say "de-men-sheeea" instead of "de-men-sha" for dementia. grrrrr!

Over here, it''s always pronounced the German way, with that ''a'' at the start sounding like the ''a'' in ''ha'' rather than the ''a'' in ''hall'', and the ''z'' sounding like ''tz''.

Always sounds funny when I hear the American pronunciation on TV but I think both versions are broadly accepted!

I''ve always pronounced it "AHLZ-hymers." Many people in the area in which I now reside pronounce it "Old-timers." Not kidding.
