Personally I think it looks like the padparadscha canary has been BE diffused! Wonder what AGL would say!

Eh, I wouldn't think so. I think canaries crack under the kind of heat required for diffusion.

Well I really like show stopping jewelry so I would have no problem what so ever turning those into earrings with diamond halos and drops and....well I could go on. Personally I think they are priced well enough though I"m not a hufe fan of chrysoberyl to begin with. I do think that RW is typicaly very expensive to begin with and I hate that he typically doesn't publish prices on his website but makes you call.

If you read his blog, you will see he is not much of a fan of online jewelry forums, at least when it comes to forum members evaluating the merits of a gem via photos.

If you read his blog, you will see he is not much of a fan of online jewelry forums, at least when it comes to forum members evaluating the merits of a gem via photos.

Lula - ask yourself why! On a number of threads his "eye" was called into question and stones bought and returned as not matching the photo or description. Richard Wise doesn't like being challenged. If you find all the threads you'll see his says he uses the best photographers in the world, then he says the photos are very accurate and now you'll see he says you shouldn't evaluate gems via photos! The message changes depending on what's being sold it seems to me! Look at Gene's photos and what you'll see is what you get so it's VERY easy to judge his stones - so it can be done.

Sensibly, we all live in different corners of the globe - we can't possibly get to see each and every gem we're interested in therefore we have to rely on photos. Of course if budget allows getting a couple to compare is the best path (when you're not paying $99 shipping or only have a 5 day return window) as YOUR eye is always the most reliable!

I think your comment about him not liking being challenged nails it, LD. I also agree with you that he sends mixed messages about the value of photographs. I believe that the majority of regulars on the CS forum have done a great job educating themselves on the limits of gem photography and are upfront with newbies about what can or cannot be inferred from a photo. And I also think many of the regulars have learned how to "read" vendors' photographs -- no doubt to the consternation of more than one vendor . Someone in this thread -- maybe it was you? -- mentioned that many CS posters are able to take amazing photos of their gems. I've noticed that, too. And I would like to say thank you to Kenny for his generosity in sharing not only his beautiful gem photos but also his knowledge of photography with PS.
