My 7 year old has discovered them. Thank god my other child is a boy. I might as well start using $50 bills for toilet paper.

I saw the catalog and dumped it. Nuh uh. If I invest in anything, it will be legos (which my child loves.)

NOOOOOOOO American Girl dolls are amazing! I had seven. Or maybe eight. Let's see, I got Samantha in first grade, Molly in second grade, then Felicity, then they came out with the "like you" doll and I got that (except my grandmother has always been convinced - wrongly - that I am blonde, so my doll is blonde, whereas I have medium brown hair), and then Josephina, then Addy and Kirsten right before I aged out of playing with dolls. I had all of Samantha's furniture and clothes, and the other ones I had the most from were Felicity and Josephina because those were my favorite historical periods. I read and re-read all the books and did all the historical and educational crafts. My first "my body" kind of book was the American Girl doll one. Dallas didn't get an AG store until I was in HS but I take my cousins' children there occasionally for tiny sandwiches and shopping.

ugh I am so obsessed still. The MOMENT I have a daughter, I am going to the AG store and going on a RAMPAGE.

(My other favorite toys were Playmobile - which I bought a ton of last week because they were on sale, and my husband came home to toys all over the floor and was like, "uh, did I timewarp to the future when we have children?" and legos. And everything in the garage. I built lots of furniture for my American Girl dolls.)

We have one. DD is now 25. Right before she gave up dolls poor Kirsten got a "haircut" . We need the dolly hospital before a granddaughter inherits her.

I had to send Samantha to the doll hospital after I had her for about 5 years. I'd brushed her hair so much that much of it had been pulled out. It's like $45 for a new head and they send them home in a hospital gown and ID bracelet, which is really cute.

My favorite older item that I never bought was Josephina's holiday dress with swank mantilla veil:
http://store.americangirl.com/agshop/html/item/id/141579/uid/930

My favorite newer item is this roll-top desk:
http://store.americangirl.com/agshop/html/item/id/141477/uid/933
I should just buy it and sit my bunny at it.

Part of the fun must be collecting so many things for the dolls. I, personally, will not buy clothing for a DOLL that costs more than what I buy for myself or my daughter. I get why it's fun though, but an $80+ desk? No, no, no.... :o

Oh I loved the American Girl series! Never had a doll, though.

My mom bought the patterns for the clothes and is going to make them. Some ebayers make nice ones too! I would NEVER pay for the clothes. Oh, and they aren't getting their hair styled for $30 either.

They weren't around when I was young-I'm of the Original CPK generation. Some of London's friends have them and now she's started to ask about them. Buuut then I heard they're like $200? Is that true? So, yeah, no. She is into Lala Loopsies at the moment, and they're expensive but not horribly so compared to the other ones. Plus, I think they're cuter than cute.

$115? with accessories, books, etc it an be close to $130

We got a hand-me-down from my niece and then bought one for DD so that Julie had a "friend". I refuse to buy the clothes or any of the furniture though. Target's My Generation has clothes and accessories that work great with the AG dolls and are way more reasonably priced. I also get stuff from eBay and Etsy and make some things.

My DD has never been to the store because I don't want to deal with what would happen if she saw all of the "stuff" they have for these dang dolls...nail polish stickers, campus cart snacks and fake hair to "change her look"....geesh...what cr*p will they think of next???

my cousin has managed to fool her girls into thinking the target my generation dolls ARE American girl dolls.

Sure, the dolls and accessories are cute, by way overpriced in my opinion. Thank goodness my girls aren't into them (which just goes to show that you can't force your kids to like something - for those of you who think that you're going on an AG shopping spree the moment your daughter is born...). One of my daughters got the Target version doll as a gift and although it's a cute doll, she never plays with it. For those of you who are into them, Etsy has a lot of handmade clothing, furniture, etc.

What if you A.) have a daughter and B.) she doesn't like AG dolls (or Playmobil)? Interest in certain toys is not a one-size-fits-all sort of thing.

I'm shocked that Astrid likes them now. She has always been into dinosaurs, and other terrifying creatures.

I would be VERY happy.

DD has a bunch of the dolls, clothes, accessories, camper etc. We have spent a small fortune on tiny typewriters and ballet barres..but she loves it. We head to the American Girl store once a year and I can't wait to take her to the Manhatten store. Its an innocent toy, and ill try to keep her little as long as possible:). This and summer camp..these are why I can't buy bling!!

Not every female would opt for such dolls or any dolls at all. I grew up much preferring playmobiles over dolls. Actually, I find almost all dolls very creepy.

My daughter has one "like me " doll even though its not like her. She now wants Julie. Haven't decided if Santa Is going
to bring her or not. I hate paying those prices :knockout: . Anyone got a decent Julie they want to
Sell or should I just go take out a personal loan and buy a new one?

My daughter's favorite was the Biddy Baby by American girl... She carried it everywhere. I had one of those cheap umbrella strollers and that doll went everywhere in that stroller with her... And about six other little babies and stuffed animals...I miss those days!! ;(

I had 2 and my sister had one over the course of our childhood. My grandma would get us them for Christmas. I loved them.

Squishables is where its at!

i have bitty baby....and molly. i sure hope i have a DD one day who will like them, bc i sure don't know what to do with them now!

I had them when I was a child and loved them. I had Addy, Felicity, Molly and Samantha and all of their book collections. I read their books a zillion times as a child and I loved my dolls (I liked other things too, like playing in the dirt and raising tadpoles; the dolls were really my only "girly" toys). I liked the fact that they all had stories-- I was an extremely shy child and because my dolls all had stories to tell, I really felt like they were my friends.

My stepmom gave them away while I was at college (without telling me), and for a while, I was pretty upset about it. But now I think it's nice that some other child can have a doll friend now, too.

If I ever have girls, I wouldn't try to force AG on them, but if they were interested, I'd be happy to buy them. I think they have the potential of being worth the money if my kids got as much out of them as I did when I was a child.

Playmobil is very thorough in providing toys for anything a child could possibly want to play-act. It's why I love them so much. I think my parents also liked them because, like legos, they were fairly gender neutral and they could buy a ton and both my brother and I could play with them. Though really I hogged them and my brother just went outside and covered himself in mud.

About half of the furniture I had was constructed by me, and well over half the clothes were things I had sewn or made my grandmother sew out of scraps. I don't think you even need patterns. I never used one for doll clothes, only for people clothes. For doll clothes I just winged it. My grandmother kept sewing wedding dresses, party dresses, etc but I had ancient greek goddesses, olympic athlete costumes, spy outfits, one particularly epic torturer/interrogator set that I jury-rigged out of a maid costume my grandmother made, spaceship commander outfits, etc. I think my grandmother's ideas of what sort of imaginative games my dolls got up to were very different than mine. Usually they were embroiled in some sort of galactic civil war or insurrection against a despotic government, not playing house.

I thought it was quite clear from my post that I would be buying these things for ME. Doesn't matter whether my kid likes them or not as long as I can cover the house in them and not look totally crazy!
