So next month my boyfriend and I get to pick up my diamond and decide on what we will be doing about the setting. The diamond is paid off (and has been since Oct. but the jeweler insisted on us leaving it there until we decide what to do about the setting). Anyway, this is the first time either of us had purchased any sort of jewelry and we are both incredibly confused over the whole thing. I found this forum recently and have learned so much (I thought knowing the 4 C''s and if it was GIA/AGS certified was enough!) from here and well as from random searching.

I posted another threat about the setting (https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/i-could-really-use-some-help-finding-a-setting.136448/), but had another question.

My diamond is GIA certified and I realize it was done 3 years ago. Could something have happened in those 3 years? Is this a new diamond or could it have been set before? Are these questions people generally ask to begin with? Would it be okay to ask now? If it has been worn or had anything done to it that could have changed the report grade would I be crazy to ask them to have it GIA certified again? The diamond was expensive for its size and we were told they wouldn''t come down in price because of the grade it received.

I just want to educate myself as much as possible before I go. We both felt so clueless when we bought the diamond and I don''t want to feel that way when we go back.

Thank you guys for all your help. This forum is amazing!

why leave it in their store ?

pick up the stone and have it check out by an independent appraiser.

Thought it would be safe there. I really am absolutely clueless about this.

If you had paid it off it is your diamond, not his, and you may do what you like with it.

In three years it is possible something happened. An independent appraiser, whom *you* choose and pay, could tell you if there was any damage.

Do you have a return policy with this jewler? They should have one if they are at all reputable. You can get out of it if you wanted.

I''m reading my receipt and it says you can return, but I don''t know how long the return policy is for. It just says no cash refunds and there may be a restocking fee. The diamond was originally chosen in June 2009 and they held onto it until it was paid off (Oct. 2009). I left it there because I figured I''d get my setting there as well and they said "well hey, just leave it here!" And we figured that would be fine. I dunno if we really screwed ourselves over by doing this. We waited so long because we wanted to have enough money saved up so he (and I since we live together and his bills are my bills and vice versa) wouldn''t have to go into any debt.

Also, how do you find an independent appraiser? How much would something like this cost?

Again, thank you all for your help we really love hearing all this advice.

You leaving the diamond with a trusted vendor is not really a concern for me (I left my diamond at my appraiser for 5 months). My concern is that you may have purchased a "used" diamond that did not get re-garded. You may have purchased something that is no longer what it says on the paper (ex. someone whacked the girdle and put a chip in it). You should have sent the diamond to an independent appraiser to make sure it is ok or had the diamond sent back to GIA for a new report.

Charmypoo I am now really concerned about the same thing. I now know what I should have done, but what should I try to do now? Should I still get an independent appraiser? How do I do that? I guess the next step is to go back to the jeweler and bring up my concerns?

Just tell your jeweller that YOU want to take YOUR diamond and have it independently appraised, and if it does not come out to your satisfaction you will return it...?

If he disagrees, tell him that you will pay the $200 to have it sent to GIA (or have him send to AGS) and if it doesn''t match the current cert and fair price paid you will reevaluate...?

I don''t get the hesitance - it''s your stone, you do what''s best for you!
