In our case, we decided to get them as a symbol of our commitment to eachother since it wasn''t feasible to get engaged at the time. For one, we weren''t ready financially for the big purchase of an actual enagement ring. Second, my BF is in the military and we wanted to wait until he finished his service or was at least closer to finishing before we got engaged so we could start making wedding plans. It''s very hard to make plans when the military is involved because schedules can change at a moment''s notice. For example, one day he''s ready to get out for good in a few months, and the next, he''s told he''s deploying to Iraq for 12 months regardless of the fact that he''s almost done serving his time. Oh yea, then his time in Iraq is extended to 15 months shortly after (true story...you might have already read it from the link above). They sure like to keep us on our toes!
