Hi! Just purchased this antique platinum Art Deco/Edwardian mounting (from the 1930's ?) for my 2.6 GIA xxx round. I have been looking at antique Art Deco mountings for a while now (to have my diamond reset) because I'm not in love with my current setting anymore.

I have posted pictures of the mounting from different angles along with comparison pics of my current setting.

The mounting is in excellent condition with intricate filigree workmanship embellished with millgrain detail - the seller's jeweler refurbished the prongs.

Specs:
32 Single cut diamonds ~ .40ctw
Color ~ G - H
Clarity ~ VS 1 - VS 2
Metal ~ Platinum (Stamped 10% Irid Plat)

I have 14 days to return the mounting, just received it yesterday. What do you think? Yay or nay?

I think the setting is very pretty, but from the face up view, it doesn't look a whole lot different than what you have now. Your diamond is beautiful!

Oh, and looking back, I don't think it goes with your diamond band, either. I'd think you'd need something like a beadset milgrain band with smaller diamonds to go with the antique ring.

I am almost thinking you should keep your ring as is, and just find an antique diamond to mount in that antique setting!

Well, I loooove it but I am biased to allllll antique settings. But I do imagine an OEC in there... The setting is beautiful tho!

Thank you DS, I really do value our opinion! The setting's workmanship is so beautiful and rare, it seems you rarely see work like that nowadays. However, if I decide not to keep it for my diamond, I just dont think I can justify keeping it at all - as an OEC diamond of that size isn't feasible right now.

I see what you mean by the two settings looking similar face down I tend to go for shanks that taper like that - you know I actually do like almost everything about my current setting except the height (sky high) and the prong tips (too bulky?) - my other option is to have the prongs altered.

Thanks for your honest opinion! :wavey:

I prefer the new mount. It looks more delicate and refined. It is lower set. I think that will look better, but are you ok with that? I also think the new mount needs different prongs. Those ones the jeweler put on are like chiclets!

I don't think the new setting works with your diamond band at all, and in fact the diamond band will ruin the new mount over time with rubbing.

I agree. I also second getting an antique stone for the new setting!! :naughty:

Thank you Dreamer! If I do keep the setting I would get a thinner millegrain diamond band to wear with it instead of my seven stone and I would wear my seven stone on my RH - I dont think they look right together either. I am in fact ok with a lower mount as my current is pretty high and it does bother me. I also noticed the prongs on the new (antique) setting, if I keep it I was actually going to have a jeweler change to more delicate split prongs I think.

I really appreciate your thoughts and opinion!

Thank you Yenny! (your SS setting is my absolute all time favorite btw!) I would have to sell my MRB in order to get an OEC ... I'm just afraid I may end up catching the OEC bug thanks to PS enablers!

Love the setting and all its intricate detailing, both of filigree and milgraining. It looks like lace in all its finery. And then along come those prongs - blechhhh! :knockout: Lose the prongs and have something more befitting of the ring built to replace them.

One question - have you worn it for a while and made sure it is comfortable? While I love antique rings and inherited a few, what I find is that a lack of a gallery - an open bottom - can sometimes be quite uncomfortable, as it puts the weight of the ring and stone on the few areas that come in contact with you finger, instead of having the pressure be distributed evenly with a gallery.

If you don't keep it, you should sell it to me :)

Hahaha Charmy!

I DO think it is beautiful and I think you should keep it if you can move the diamond band to your other hand and get a milgrain wedding band (actually, what I have would be perfect, the 2mm Tiffany Legacy band, but the price is too crazy now. Victor or Maytal can make you one.).

Considering only the setting... I LOVE it. Love love love it.

It does lend itself to an OEC but only a pricescoper is going to pick up on that

If you do wear it with a wedding band would you consider a spacer ring to protect them?

I love it! Would you mind sharing where you found it?

Don't sell your MRB for an old cut because it matches the setting. Silly PSers :rodent: Your MRB will look great in that mount.

Keep it, keep it!! It is such an artistic item!!! You should not sell any of your items, all of them are so full of tastes, just collect them perfectly, they would bring you much pleasure whenever you look at them!!

Minousbijoux - it really is comfortable actually, and regarding the prongs - if I do keep it I will need to think about exactly how to change them. Thanks for your input!

Charmypoo - if you were serious - The setting is for an 8.5-9.0 mm stone. I purchased it from a store on eBay called "Antique Jewelry Co./estate 1920" located in Florida. The asking price was $4400, he accepted my offer of $3500. If you are interested and I decide I dont want it (as of today I'm still unsure) let me know. It is a size 6.25 though, I would have it sized down to 4.75, I don't know if it would compromise the integrity of the setting to size it way down to your tiny size? =)

DS - I agree, since the setting has such a large 'donut?' it sits funny against my 7 stone whereas my current setting sits virtually flush, so I would need to get an antique style thin diamond band to wear as a wedding band if I keep it.

Hi hippi pixi - I would just wear a thin antique style diamond band with it.

Dreamer - haha! No worries - I'm still mesmerized by my MRB and would have a very VERY hard time parting with it, even for an OEC. Had it since June and I still cant take my eyes off of it!

Thats what I love about it, it is a work of art, one of a kind!

I returned the setting and have received my refund and now I think I am having returner's remorse! :errrr: Did I make a mistake? After researching authentic art deco settings I have come across lots of settings with the same type prongs, seems they are typical of the era. I wish I had kept it for the extra week that I could have. Anyway, I highly recommend the eBay store where I purchased it - Antique Jewelry Co. (antiquejewelryco.com) he was a sweetheart before the sale and when I asked for a refund. Anyway, I kind of miss the setting now after looking at the pics. ;(
