Antique Settings - Opinions?

Hello!

Does anyone know what the particular style of antique prongs are called in the first and second picture?

Also, which setting do you think is prettier - the squared prong setting (pics 1 & 2) or the crown prong setting (pics 3 & 4)? Thanks for your opinions!

I normally love crown settings, but that particular one doesn't do much for me. I love the first one! I believe that type of prong has been called ribbon prongs on the forum. And I really love it! But if you don't love one of the settings, then I would keep looking a little longer.

I do not know about the prongs, but to be honest, neither of these settings is really doing it for me. If I had to pick, I'd go with the first one. On the second one, from the angle of the last picture it looks like there's a gap in the setting that looks weird to me.

I would normally like the crown but this one looks like something has been cut out from underneath it or perhaps the crown was
added on to it at a later date (just doesnt look right). I really like the square cornered one.

Another vote for the first one..the 2nd one looks a bit "off" as ppl have suggested.

The first setting is a bit hard to see in the straight on photo- are the corners filled in with metal, i.e. a sqaure looking setting for a round stone? It looks like an illusion setting, to me, which is a classic vintage style. If they aren't then....I have no idea what those corner prongs are technically called

I do prefer the first setting to the second; I think there are more graceful lines to be had in the multi-prong crown look.

Thanks for your responses and honest opinions! I thought the second setting looked funny too but didn't want to mention it (power of suggestion) as I wanted to see if anyone else thought the same thing. I keep going back to the first one but not sure if those prongs will cover too much diamond? Anyway, I don't "have to have it" which means I don't actually love it and I have to love it.

In the meantime, I'm having fun looking at antique settings. I love Art Deco and Art Nouveau styles! I still may just have my prongs reworked on my current setting though - I love the shank but not the prongs. I wonder if I could have my heavy prong tips made into split claws while having the setting lowered as it is sky high.

Between those two, I like the first one. I like prongs delicate, delicate, delicate unless they are chunky enough to be a statement in the design.
