Any ideas where to get white debutante gown?

If there is a David's Bridal where she is, have them measure her. It will be tough to do it herself. Plus she needs to buy shoes before hemming, obviously. Bridal dresses vary wildly in size compared to regular dresses, so sizes mean very little. I highly recommend buying a sample wedding dress. They have them on sale all the time because they get new ones in each season. Our daughter's wedding dress was $1600 (and really gorgeous) marked down to $800, but we had to pay $500 for alterations and bustle. Still, even ordering the "correct" size, almost everyone still has to pay for alterations. There's no way I'd pay full price for a debutante gown or a wedding gown, for that matter.

I’m with you on this. I have no problem with sample sizes or in excellent condition preloved. I can’t believe my friend paid 7k for that dress. I thought she was out of her mind.

Can I ask how one becomes a debutante? It's not something that we do here, so I'm curious about what it all means and how people become involved in them.

If you come to ny, go to "the bridal garden". It's a second hand and sample shop. Dresses that retail for thousands are sold for hundreds. And...the proceeds go to charity. Klienfelds...stressful.

Hi,

Since most of us don't have daughters that go to debutant balls, I would like to ask you if you would keep us in the know about this event. I enjoy these type of events and and would much prefer learning about someone I sort of know from PS rather than read about Megan and Harry all the time.
I am disappointed that Queenie60 didn't tell us about her daughter, although it may have been before PS.

Love the dresses, although they don't all look so simple to me. In Chicago, where I live, we do have a Polish Debutante ball, but it is not well advertised, but is important in that community.

I hope you share this lovely and stressful event with us. It sure beats "ringworm"

Lol. Ringworm. That’s a shame.

It’s mostly secret, and since I’m in Louisiana it is in conjunction with a Mardi Gras ball, which I believe most deb things in Louisiana are. I’m not sure about old money New Orleans.

Because it is in conjunction with Mardi Gras, there is a King (the Mardi Gras Krewe is all male) and a Queen (one of the debs). I have been told that many years the queen is whoever wants to pay for the Queen’s reception the evening of.

Each of the officers of the krewe wear tights and costumes and masks— we aren’t supposed to know who the officers are. And the king wears his regalia, a white wig, etc. A few years ago we knew the king— we got an invitation in the mail to all the King events and we had no idea who it was. He is officially revealed the night before, but we had basically narrowed it down and correctly guessed. That was a ton of fun.

So as the Mardi Gras ball begins, they do the deb presentation first, they announce the lady and her father and they walk and sort of sashay back and forth from side to side of the dance floor and everyone claps and bows to her etc. The spotlight stays on her and they she is escorted up the dais by her appointed masked officer and when they are all done the queen and king are presented and they all sit on the dais and then the ball begins.

During the ball, people line up and go give homage to the king and queen.

It was...my sil got a gorgeous, albeit simple dress. The fabric was Devine and the lines oh so elegant. Very tailored with a simple train. I spent three times what she did for my wedding party dress....can you say "jealous"?
 
Wow, yours in New Orleans is completely different than ours due to the ties to Mardi Gras! Ours are more like a formal dinner and ball with the girls being introduced with their escorts. There are many parties prior to the big event. Our daughter was invited but chose not to participate, and I honestly didn't care either way.

It in interesting to see how each area does it. I would think Mardi Gras balls and debutantes go hand in hand!
 
Yes, I can see it in your state/area, but I don't think other states necessarily tie them into that. Some here are in December, for example.

Long video you can fast forward. Mardi Gras ends at midnight in New Orleans when the Krewes of Rex and Comus meet.

(Comus is Racist and chose to stop parading when they were forced to integrate, so there is the back story on that, but they still present a ball)

It is and our krewe has a whole back story about the swamps and it’s all mystical and magical. There are tree limbs and candles and barrels and moss and fog machine, etc.

Rex is the end all be all ball.
 
They emailed this morning and asked if we would consider delaying until February 2021 since they had a plethora of young women this year.

My daughter decided to delay until February 2021 which thrills me because there is too much going on this year.
 
Ok well we decided to go shopping today and found out it takes 4-6 months for the dress to come in, so she tried some on and we both knew this was the one as soon as they got it on. DEEDF196-9C23-4514-A4AB-448B04BAFF65.jpeg

Thank you! It was the second dress she tried on and as soon as she found the pockets, she started styling and we knew we were done. She tried on about 5-6 more just to be sure, but it took all of 35 minutes lol. We are easy.

The interesting thing is they took down the name of the Krewe and her name and style dress so no one else can get this dress. They said we did the right thing starting early.

Hers didn’t actually go that low in the back... not sure why. My daughter is modest, so she liked the band across the top.
Yes, simple and elegant. We don’t need to break rules. Some do.
 
This is so interesting, I love the photos!. My daughter lived in Louisiana and NOLA for a few years and so I got to know a bit about the culture and krewes. When I was a freshman in college I was invited to a cotillion and I was so stressed about having to find a date lol.
