Any reason to have the bottom of the setting be open?

I have bought an emerald cut diamond engagement ring and the bottom of the setting is only barely open (i.e., the holes under the cutlet are very small) so that it looks like I can see the ring through the diamond. Is this normal?

Do you mean small holes under the diamond like this?

If so, these are put there so you can clean the diamond easier.

and what is the purpose of a complete cone bezel which does not have a hole iin the bottom? is there an advantage or disadvantage to that?

ps when i was in australia, the jewelers there told me that opal is always set with an open hole so that it can be verified that it is indeed an opal and not a doublet or triplet......

No. It is a three stone emerald cut (the same as on Tiffany''s website) but when you look through the diamonds you can see the actual metal of the ring below. The holes over the cutlet are really small, so its not just the finger you can see but the actual metal band. I was wondering if that is why many of the rings I see have open bottoms?

am I on crack or should you not be able to see the metal setting through a diamond? Shouldn''t the light from the facets be refracting back at angles so you don''t see any metal? If I saw metal through my diamond, I would think I had a CZ.

I agree with you! Why can I see the metal???? The diamonds are emerald cut so that makes it slightly better, but still, what should I do?

I agree with Mara...if you can see through to the bottom and see the metal, I''d have to wonder what type of stone you''re really getting?!

crankydave,

thank you for the explanation...should have known there was a very practical reason for it.
but if its a very tiny hole, won''t it be more difficult to clean?

Not sure what could be done ...

It could be that the stones leack allot or simply have large, steep pavilion facets and tables so there is a window through the stone at a slight tilt.

I can''t say the image of the setting is very clear to me either. Is the center stone set in a peg basket ? Any chance to see a picture of the ring ? What are the proportions of the stone ?

In reply to Mara''s comment.
In a brilliant cut diamond it would be unusual to see the metal because of the refraction and reflection of light.

But step-cuts (like Emerald-cuts) tend to be very transparend, so seeing the metal through the diamond is not unusual at all.

You said its not that unusual to see the metal through an emerald cut diamond. Is that really true? My diamond guy said the "band" I was seeing was actually the sparkle of the diamond. Is he totally full of it?

A "bowtie" is probably what my guy is talking about. But explain this, why is the bowtie:
1) the exact same width as the actually band
2) the exact same width throughout all three stones, even though the center stone is TWICE as large as the other two.
3) in the exact same location as the actual band would be.

Thanks so much for your help.
