Any vets currently online?

xylitol is some nasty stuff. I remember a lady's dog got into her purse and got some of her gum, and that dog really suffered.

I police all food coming in the house, especially because Gigi will try to eat it if it falls on the floor! Its because of her that we eat better (funny but not really)

But even the peanut butter is freaking suspect...I make sure to only get PB thats peanuts and salt only.

I hear you, @Arcadian! My problem is that I've had 7 adults here for the last couple of weeks - 5 of whom don't live here. So there have been things going in and out of the house - to say nothing of gifts as well - that weren't from me and are basically impossible to police without being the Eva Braun of hostesses. For example, the chocolates were in the trash can because I put them there. But how the DOG got into my office is beyond me. Everyone is doing their best, but it's a bit of a case of 'who's on first' at the moment.

All is well now, tho, and I've gone through the food in the house and tossed out a bunch of stuff that I didn't like the look of, from a nutrition perspective. So it shouldn't happen again. Altho as they say, the best laid plans....

Fingers crossed!

So glad your precious fur baby is remaining hale and hearty.
It’s such a worry when our fur babies ingest something they shouldn’t.
Those 2 extra fruity hot cross buns that Mica ate, and ironically DH bought cos they were cheap “on special”, caused me a minor heart attack and stroke plus $3,000 odd at the Vet.

Oh Bron - I've been down this path when I found my in-laws feeding my dogs leftover Christmas cake. I was torn between panic and fury and, frankly, have never gotten over it. After the storm had passed, I remember saying to my in-laws - oh so articulately, slowly, clearly and without any room for question - that I utterly blamed myself, because I had failed to realize that many people had zero experience when it came to dogs and most were simply ignorant. I forgave them for their lack of knowledge, but asked them not to interact with my dogs again - at all - or I'd need to relocate them (the in-laws, not the dogs) to a hotel.

I am rarely angry, being a fairly calm sort of person. But I was angry then.

Also remember that if you use Chewy, you can chat online with a vet. I have used it to good success in the past, but they are limited in the recommendations they can make (like any healthline where they can’t see the patient).

Thank you for this suggestion! We got a new RX supplement for one of our cats and after a few days noticed that we had mistakenly given him too much. I remembered this thread and the suggestions for Chewy and the Pet Poison Control hotline. We have auto-ship with Chewy, so they were able to connect us to an online chat with a friendly, helpful vet. She was able to advise us before our own vet was able to call us back. What a relief! Our boy is going to be just fine. I am so grateful!

@mrs-b I'm so glad your boy is ok too!!

Several years ago, i heard my 8 year old say, “ha ha! She’s chewing gum!” He had given my dog xylitol gum. Luckily, we got her to the vet in time. They did the whole make her vomit, charcoal routine. Her liver values were high for a year. She was fine when all was said and done.

Oh wonderful! I’m so glad that was helpful, and glad your kitty is okay.

I came because I am a veteran and found I was not the vet you needed. I am glad to hear your dog is well and I have to laugh a little at my own foodie of a dog. He ruined my dinner the other night by eating 2/3rds of a large Costco Chicken Pot Pie that was sitting on the shelf by the stove waiting for the stove to reach cooking temperature.

Oh, I was cranky.

I once had another lab that got into a five pound box of chocolates under the Christmas Tree and ate the whole thing. That was a LOT of years ago, and it would be another five or ten years before I heard chocolate was poisonous to dogs. I am thinking not so much to 70 pound labs...
