Anyone else prefer smaller diamonds?

I don''t know why, but I really find myself liking the way smaller diamond rings (particularly solitaires) look. Does anyone else feel this way? I think they look classy without overwhelming the finger.

I think it is nice to have balance between the ring and the person wearing it. If she is uncomfortable with a big (or small) rock on her hand, it will probably show in her manner. In my experience, women get used to a larger stone fairly quickly. A small ring is good for some of life''s events but engagement is a big deal.

I don''t know how small you''re talking about, but I prefer smaller diamonds. Especially in my particular setting. I have a 0.59 ct ACA and I love it.

Exactly how small are you talking? I do prefer stones that are not SO huge... Mine is a .70 ct and I just adore it!

Mmmmm yeah a 2.26ct is not small

If I can ugrade to a 2 ct, I would be happy so your little diamond is HUGE to me. But to answer the question, I love huge... gaudy or not. But you know financially I don''t have to worry about too big unless I hit the jack pot and then watch out.

I love all (well cut) diamonds. Some of my favorite diamonds are the itty bitty teeny weeny perfect little ACA melee stones in my wedding band!

I also love my studs... about 3/4 carat each.

And I ADORE my e-ring stone, an AGS-0 2.36.

Personally, I have never seen a beautiful, well cut stone that I thought was "gaudy" or "too big". I''d wear a 10 carater proudly and happily if I could afford it.

I have a friend who''s e-ring is just under half a carat and it''s gorgeous. She was the first out of us to get engaged, (prior to PS days) and hers to this day, is the only stone that makes me stare. So yeah, smaller stones do look lovely when well cut and I think have as much presence as do the larger ones.

I agree that cut is much more important than size.

I've seen tons of butt-ugly large stones some gorgeous small ones.

Every time I put on my 0.8 ct Solasfera I am blown away by the light performance.
It is 100% satisfying, even though I'm accustomed to wearing a larger stone.

In all seriousness. I love big sparkly solitaires - to a point. I think my "too big for anyone" for an RB in a ring is 4ct, and my "too big for me" is 3ct (which ain't gonna happen, so I needn't worry, as FI is lovingly reassuring me over my shoulder). That said, the under 1ct thread is one of my "favourites" and is often revisited... a smaller, gorgeously cut fireball beats out a dull honker anyday, anytime.

I love smaller earrings, though. I couldn't imagine having 1ct in each ear - even my favourite pearl studs are only 6mm. That's just my preference.

I do think that when a diamond is smaller (say, under 1/2 ct) the setting is more important. Smaller diamonds in simple settings look geat, smaller diamonds in elaborate settings look fantastic, large diamonds in simple settings look wonderful, but large diamonds in elaborate settings - not for me. Again - purely personal preference!

I didn''t want to put an exact size for smaller diamonds because it depends on the ring size and I don''t want to offend anyone. I''ll just say that the under 1 carat thread is one of my favorites. I''ve seen some really stunning stones under .5 on that thread. On size 5-6, I like the way the .33-.5 looks. I''m talking mostly about round diamonds, although other shapes look good too.

I love my smaller diamonds! I proudly wear:
.35 ct solitaire pendant
.65 tcw studs
.67 ct solitaire ering
1.05 bezel pendant
And the day the hubby comes home with that 5 carat honker I dream about, I'll proudly wear that!

All kidding aside, there is beauty in all diamonds. They are a wonder of nature, and I love the "under 1 carat" thread, too.

I reset my original e-ring (original diamond was 0.18 ct) with a 0.62 ct ISEE2 stone form GOG that is just gorgeous. That is my everyday ring, and is plenty big for everyday. My diamond studs are 0.85 ctw, or just under 5 mm, and are perfect for me.

In many cases, bigger diamonds with more intricate settings means the ring will be worn less. I''m all about wearability.

In the "real world", my 1.01 ct round is respectable, in the "Pricescope world", I can feel like it''s a little small. It wasn''t in my budget at the time to get a larger stone (at least one that would perform well), but I''m really happy with the size of mine on my finger. I have two side stones (saphs), so the finger coverage is almost complete. If I were to upgrade I''m not sure I would venture beyond, say, 1.5 cts, just because I''m so happy with mine now. Ask me again after I try on a 2 ct though lolol.

I think that its judgemental to say large diamonds are gaudy...........there are many factors, physical size of the person and hand, personal style and personality etc. I have a 5 carat ring and I do not consider it remotely gaudy. It is in a simple low profile setting like its wearer: me. I think its easy to define things.........imagine Victoria Beckham with a 1 carat round Tiffany style ring. It doesnt match her personality or style.

To each her own, but I prefer bigger diamonds. In fact, if I could go bigger for my 2.5 carat e-ring, I would! I have pretty small fingers (size 4) but I still don''t think the stone "overwhelms" my hand or anything.

I think anything under 3 carats (especially in a solitaire setting) tends not to look gaudy or unbecoming. It takes the right attitude to carry a 3+ carat stone.

I don''t think big stones are "gaudy" as Kenny said... but yes, it does take a certain elan to wear them well.

For wifey2b I think she deserves a 5ct Octavia on her finger.
That said her .23RB and .42RB both look awesome on her and bling bling!

I said huge stones are gaudy.

But it is all relative.
Everyone in your world may be walking around with 100-carat honkers.
If that's the case they won't think of them as gaudy.

I find this subject really interesting.

Size is relative.

Relative to financial position.
Relative to where you live.
Relative to age.
Relative to social status.

Compared to lots of the rings I see on these boards mine is small but in the context of where I live and the people I associate with 0.63ct is actually quite large.

I tried on larger stones and wasn''t comfortable with wearing them everyday. Partly due to carrying something worth that much around, partly due to the attention it would attract and partly due to guilt knowing that money could have been used on our home deposit.

I love the classic look to a small solitaire and my ring is perfect for me. I can see myself more willing to wear larger/more expensive stones in the future when I''ve graduated school (for the second time), can more easily afford it and belong to a social group that is more financially mature but I don''t think I''ll ever ''upgrade'' my e-ring.

In Australia small is more common too mostly I think due to inflated prices. I tried on a few 1ct rings in stores here and most were priced 20k+

Rings are so personal I say go with what you like and can afford, it doesn''t really matter what other people think.

Ok, I''m glad. I really didn''t mean for the thread to be offensive. It is not an attack on larger diamonds or their owners. I was just curious if there were others out there that actually prefer smaller diamonds.
