I go to the salon every 4 weeks and I pay $45-50. I love to change my color often or add highlights occasionally so this probably wouldn't be the right service for me. Plus I doubt I would be very good at applying the color and am covering up a lot of gray. I live in a house full of men so no-one would help me get the back covered etc.
I have had some bad experiences with hair color in the past which scares me off, too.

I love my salon and stylist, and the pampering experience. All worth full price in my opinion.

I don't think that would work for me. I have highlights, so it's not just about finding the correct color, but also the technique. I have had bad experiences with coloring my own hair in the past, so I will stick with going to the salon.

That being said, if I ever decide to go darker again and just use one color all over, I would consider using their service.

I don't. But only because it costs $20 and I can get other professional color from ebay for under $10 (Matrix, Redken, Framesi). I found the service of e-salon to be really good and I would certainly recommend it for a beginner.

The e-salon developer (for the permanent color) had really strong fumes. Also, the color is a liquid so it was a bit messy. It also stained my shower curtain liner.

Thanks Jennifer. I also read the info and it says you should not save and use what is left over. The current dye I have been using I really like because you can use what is left over at a later date. Herbatint- so it costs a few dollars per use for me basically. And it is no ammonia and low peroxide. I tried TooPatient's recommendation-wella (I think it was her rec) and I really liked it too but it was a demi permanent and that just doesn't last more than 2 weeks for me since I deep condition my hair 3 times a week and wash and condition every other day. So though I really wanted to go naturally gray every time I try I just don't care for the look on me. But one day I am going to really try and let it just be.

Men look great with gray. I have seen some women with beautiful gray hair but it ages them no matter how beautiful the gray is. One day I won't care but right now I do.

Hair color is the hardest hair treatment to get right. Even salons occasionally have "cut it all off and wear a wig" events. Years ago blending the correct colors was an issue but now even the drugstore brands come in 50+ shades so that's not the biggest problem. Choosing the correct color to get what you want--that's a much harder problem.

You have to worry about ammonia (dangerous), no ammonia (doesn't work as well), allergic reactions, high lights and low lights (you can't really do these on yourself), foils (necessary for the high and low lights in some cases), roots (color is bad for the hair and coloring your entire head over and over will eventually fry the hair), peroxide, lifting your old color and/or blending your old and new colors, leaving it on too long and having your hair fall apart, not leaving it on long enough and being unhappy with the color, mixing perms and colors, mixing certain conditioners and colors, fading, brassiness, undertones, etc., etc....

My stylist has a steady business charging women hundreds of dollars to condition their home-colored hair and cut and treat it into a style that you can wear out in public without attracting the attention of small children.

I know there are many people who use the home hair colors and feel they are fine, but there are also many people out there walking around with hideous dye jobs. I'm not really a "color" person. I've done it a few times for fun, but I don't get it done every month the way many people do. Even if you feel this is something you want to experiment with I doubt whether the final result from a custom color blend will be in any way distinguishable from the final result with the closest possible drugstore shade.

Bwahahahahahaha! This! This is why I don't colour my own hair! I'm clueless with stuff like this, and there's no question, small children would point and laugh.

It doesn't help that I have red hair. There is a high, high risk that I'm going to look like Ronald McDonald. I'm learning to like the grey highlights. I'm treating them as a badge of rank.

I color my own at home and even put in highlights - pretty successfully - from time to time. The last time I had it salon-dyed it came out bright orange-red (NOT a good color for me!) and it took two additional treatments at the salon, then two more at home, to get it back to brown. Thank goodness my hair is pretty much indestructible! I'm sure my current stylist could do a good job with the color, but for now I'll do it myself and save a few bucks. It took me a long time to find the right drugstore color, so I think I'll stick with it and pass on switching to the next big thing.

I read that it strengthens hair and makes it thicker.
My hair is ungodly thin from medication. I need magic.

My daughter is a stylist, and gets my hair color so I already use a professional product. I am pretty good at doing it myself but I have to say, when she does it it comes out much better. It is kind of like blowing out your own hair, it just always looks better when someone does it for you. I dont do high lights myself but when she does my color she pulls a few strands through and give me low lights too. I dont think it will do any more damage to stylists than the economy has already done.

Just know that you just can't use normal dye again til the henna is cut out of your hair.

Does anyone know if their dyes are PPD free? Ammonia free isn't sufficient for me; my scalp will itch and burn for weeks unless I use a dye that does not contain p-phenylenediamine.
