Anyone start small and stay small?

My ering is just over a carat, super-ideal from BGD. I love it, it still does a great job of being a beautiful diamond ring. Now that BGD offers lab diamonds, I’ve toyed with the idea of going bigger, but mostly just because of the novelty of relatively inexpensive super-ideal diamonds. But I realize that I don’t necessarily want a bigger diamond, just because I can have one. I could have easily gone bigger the first time around. Size just wasn’t that important to me. (Takes all kinds, right?) I liked the idea of having the best possible cut, not the biggest possible stone. So my question: Has anyone else chosen a “small” diamond and stuck with it?

You are probably a person who appreciates quality as much (or more than quantity) and doesn't feel the need to make a statement. I am the same way. In fact, the last thing I want is to be having people comment on my jewelry. It is something that should complement whatever you're wearing, but not be standing out too much. It is also my own knowledge that it is a quality piece, and represents something that has artistic merit that makes it unique, etc. I don't really care if others are impressed. It's a personal thing! Finally, if you are spending a significant amount for something made of gold and the stones have intrinsic value, it will be solid investment. So, shop carefully but let your own taste dictate what you buy.

My mom had a two carat diamond, and my sister has a three carat diamond…. I didn’t really want to be responsible for something so expensive, but I felt I had to get at least a carat so my husband didn’t look bad to my family. I went lower on color to save money. The budget wasn’t what we could spend, but how much money I wanted to wear on my hand. I’m not sure *why* I worry about that, we have insurance etc.,
but I do.

No one wants to be a target, but wearing very expensive or noticeable jewelry in public can be dangerous!

This was absolutely a concern for me. I wanted to be able to ride the bus without thinking about my jewelry.

I had a very fun visit to Blue Nile today. I was looking at anniversary rings, but I couldn’t help playing with their solitaire display. They have size stone from .50 carat to 4 carats in half carat increments, all set in the same basic solitaire. A two carat diamond, which always looked substantial but normal on my mom, looked comically large on my tiny hands. (I’m a size five, but not because I’m skinny. My hands are just super small. I wear my kids’ gloves.) The four carat, which was actually a CZ, but still fun to try, was absurd. I also tried a 1.5, which was fine, but it’s nice to know that 1 carat is just right for *me*.

Yes, that is what happens when you get older.
