Quick question -- does anyone have a necklace or pendant with stones that are 4+ carats? Any pictures?

I''ve been looking at a stone (11mm x 9mm) and somehow it seems a bit large for a ring... could it work as a pendant or is that going to seem even more bulky & over-kill?

Sorry if this seems like a silly question... I''m having a tough time picturing this!

Perhaps I''m the wrong person to ask but as far as I''m concerned- THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS TOO LARGE IN GEMSTONES. Now with that said i think a 11 x 9 is not to large for a ring. It sounds like you have an oval. I think an 11 x 9 is great for a ring....for me personally it is borderline small for a pendant. but then I love larger gemstones.

It would help to get a better idea if you told us what kind of stone (do you have pictures), and what kind of setting you plan on putting it in etc. Also, what size ring you wear. If you are a size 4 then the ring will look different then a size 8 if you know what I mean. I''m a size 6.5 and I like the way the 11 x 9 looks on me.

the bulkiness also depends on how you set it. there are many designs that are sleek and will take away from the bulkiness of a stone. If you are worried about the large size I probably wouldn''t do a halo. I would bezel set it. Just my .02 though.

I have a large topaz pear pendant that was a present from my parents about six years ago. I don''t have a picture, but it''s in a simple white gold setting. I think a 9 x 11mm would look great as a ring or a pendant.

It's a Garnet Hessonite I've been looking at for a while from Richard Homer... hopefully it won't disappear by posting it here... I absolutely LOVE the color & the cut... I just worry it's too big. Originally I was hoping for a bezel-set ring, but it feels like it would be huge that way. That's when I started thinking about it as a pendant... then I wasn't sure if even that would be too big!

Oops -- forgot to add... my ring size is 5.5

As far as I''m concerned, that''s nowhere near too big for a pendant (or a ring either) but it''s not *my* tastes that matter.

I''m a ring size 6 and think 11x9 would be a great size for a ring . . . OR a pendant. Actually think it might be a little small for a pendant, but . . . that''s just my opinion -- I tend to like big and fun. And, you have to consider that if you set it traditionally, north-south, the width of the stone is only 9. Certainly not wider than your finger. I think the bigger issue for some would be how deep the cut is, so how high would it rise, in terms of a ring.

Have you tried (and I know this sounds silly) cutting out a little paper model of a rough 11x9 oval? I do that all the time, to gauge finger (or pendant, in this case) sizing.

I love that stone, btw.

I have a 4.1 ct aquamarine in a pendant here Link. I also purchased the pendant pictured from ACStones in August in which the larger piece of carnelian is nearly 1 1/2 inches high, so well over 4 carats, I''m sure. I love this piece. It is easy to wear, and is obviously a beautiful custom piece which gets lots of notice.

Really I would get the stone and when you see it in real life I would then decide about the setting. I always think the stones will be bigger then they actually are.

Well, I have an amethyst pendant that is 24 cts. so obviously I don''t think it''s too big. If you do a search, you can see my stone. I don''t have pictures of the pendant since I just had it made recently and have not gotten around to taking pictures.

I’m in the process of purchasing a 12.6 x 8.25 x 6.4 mm pear stone myself for ring. I was thinking of having it set in a pendant until I finalize the ring design. It’s a matter of personal preference how comfortable one feels wearing different sized stones. I know that Harriet and Tourmaline Lover are sporting stones over 5 ct in rings. However, I also understand that many don’t feel as comfortable and prefer it as a pendant.

I have a rubellite pendant with a diamond halo, I think the stone is between 6 to 7 carats. It was originally a ring but I ask the jeweller to change it to a pendant free of charge. I wore it for my wedding and for going out at night time. I think it depends on the style of the pendant rather than the stone size.

Tried to post last night but the board ate my attempt, so here goes again...

I don''t think that''s too big for a pendant at all. It would be a little larger than I''d feel comfortable wearing in a ring, personally, but as a pendant? Not bulky at all! It would be modest, if anything, especially as a solitary stone.
