Aother question please, setting for marquise reagrding the prongs

They showed me 2 settings , both cathedral or tiffany settings.....one had 6 prongs ...smaller looking points / balls and the other had prongs in the middle and a v type thing on each end. What is the difference ?? I really like one over the other byt they are highly reccommending the one I dont like, say its a firmer hold and such. The diamond is a 2.15 carat marquise. Thank you in advance for your help.

Welcome to PS

The " V prongs" are said to protect the tips of these shapes such as Marquise, Pear etc from chipping as they enclose the diamond in more metal rather than the usual prongs. It is a matter of preference, maybe one of the Marquise owners can advise you better.

If it was me I would want the points protected as best I could, maybe the jeweller could modify the prongs so they look less obvious? But it is your call of course.

I would absolutely not have a marquise set without the V''s or chevrons. The points are just to vulnerable. My settng has V''s but they are small and you don''t even notice them when I have it on. Some rings have bigger, bulkier V''s so if that setting has those, I would keep looking. But you must protect those points!

Hello. I have a 1.19 ct marquise that is set in a tiffany setting with the regular type of prongs as opposed to the v-shaped chevron prongs. My old diamond was set with the v-shaped prongs, and I didn''t care for it. I specifically asked for regular prongs when I upgraded.

The v-shaped prongs never looked like they were set right on the stone. The stone always looked kind of lopsided. And the v-shaped prongs were much more obtrusive than the regular prongs. Plus, the v-shaped prongs used to catch on stuff all the time, and there were always little bits of fiber sticking out of them. I had asked the jeweler to see if he could fix them so that they wouldn''t snag all the time, and he said that this was just the nature of this type of prongs.

My upgraded diamond that is set with the regular prongs is very secure, and the points on the marquise are very adequately covered and protected.

It''s probably more a matter of personal preference as to which one you prefer. I''ve had two different jewelers tell me that one type of prongs isn''t better, safer, or more secure than the other.

Even with a safe girdle width, I would never suggest to anyone to not use chevrons. One knock in just the right place and you will chip a point right off. I have never had a single fiber stuck in my chevrons. A well made ring should have smooth chevrons that do not catch. If they do, they need to be fixed.

I also recommend v-prongs for safety. My marquise has v-prongs at both ends and regular prongs at each side.
