Appraisal advice

Hi all,

I have a sapphire engagement ring that I need to get appraised. I'm wondering if there's anyone here who is in the Bay Area and can advise me on where to go to get a fair appraisal around San Francisco or otherwise.

The stone is from Jeff White and it cost me $1850. The setting was maybe 3k, it is a platinum band with 2 small side diamonds. I know that it's harder to find jewelry stores who specialize in sapphire and I don't want the stone to be undervalued. The thing is, it cost me much less than the stones I saw in stores even though it was far nicer. The color is a lighter blue and I'm wondering if some appraisers would value it less because of that since the deep blue is considered "desirable".

So, if there are people who are familiar with this area that would be ideal, and any general advice about the process is also welcome because this was my first significant purchase and you guys also told me everything I needed to know to get the ring in the first place!

Another factor is that the jewelry store that did the setting did kind of a bad job. The stone was crooked and I realized later that in order to "fix it" they just twisted the prongs slightly from beneath, so if you look at the ring from the underside you can tell it's asymmetrical, although it's not very noticeable in practice in terms of wearing the ring. (I never got my setting fee refunded and then the store went out of business...)

How much would this sort of thing influence an appraisal? I would think the stones and the platinum band itself make up most of the value and this wouldn't matter too much, but wanted to ask. I don't have any active plan to get it reseated otherwise.

A list of appraisers from the PS Resource tab. Barbra is well versed with all types of coloured gemstones and would be my first pick. You can tell her that you don't want an inflated price but a fair replaceable assessment.
