Are engagement pictures worth it?

From the variety of responses its pretty clear that they are worth it only if the couple thinks they are worth it. That being said, we thought they were worth it as well. Our engagement pictures I consider to be pretty terrible and they haven''t seen the light of day but they were still worth it because it showed me how our photographer was going to work with us the day of our wedding and it helped my unphotogenic husband loosen up and try to be comfortable in front of the camera. These two things were priceless to me.
