Are princess cuts going out of style?

I thought the princess cut was the second most popular cut after the round. However, as I've been browsing engagement ring settings, there seems to be less for princess cuts. I know most settings can be made to fit any shape stone, but is this a sign of a decline in popularity of the princess cut? I've been looking at hand forged settings from Leon Mege, Victor Canera, and Steven Kirsch, and others and noticed there are hardly any princess cut rings, if any at all. Another PSer mentioned in a previous post that if I get a princess cut ring, in five years I may feel it is "dated".

Is the cushion, asscher, and radiant cut "in" and the princess cut is now dated??

I am asking because I originally wanted the princess cut, and am now second-guessing. I know many princess cuts are not cut well so people may think in general they are not as brilliant? But that could be the case with any shape diamond.. What are your thoughts about the Solasfera princess, ACA princess (whiteflash), or one that has AGS 000?

I feel bad as I dont want my remark to change the way YOU feel about YOUR ring.

I do believe a princess cut has peaked in popularity. And they were pretty darn popular. And the higher things fly the harder they fall. Like I mentioned. Marquise were the height of sophistication in what, late 70-80s? And they had a SHARP decline in the 90s. And they are still digging themselves out of that hole.

Id think they will say "90s-00s" in a few years. IMHO they do that already. But who's to say a cushion won't scream "10s-20s" in 20 years from now?

Do I think they are dated? Yes. Does that bother you. Oh I don't know. I wear a marquise even though many here wouldn't touch one with a 10 foot pole.

Wear what YOU love. I just bought it up as you seem to be looking at a few different shapes, and I think when you consider a princess, that's something one should consider. :wavey:

As much as I think they ARE dated (and I'm not a fan), I still see people asking for advice on selecting one in the rocky talky forum on a consistent basis.

Are there other shapes you like?

Yes.

But people vary.
Not everyone cares about 'style'.
I see style as caring more for what others think of you, rather than choosing what YOU like.

If you like a shape, wear it.
Or, if you like being 'in style' don't wear things out of style, and yes I think the Princess is going out of style and will go the way of the marquise cut, and be associated with a decade or two.

Neither approach is better than the other.
People just vary.

I think it really depends on where you live. I live in the Rocky Mountains and they're very popular here. Will that change in 5 years? Maybe, but who knows. Personally, I had a princess engagement ring and I loved it. Would I get another one? No - for a lot of reasons. I think you have to choose a shape based on what speaks to you, rather than what's popular.

Wear what pleases your eye! It's all about personal preference.
I used to have a princess but grew tired of the 'ice cube' style. So, I traded up to a creamy OEC. But as the others also mentioned, choose what's best for you.

Niel: No don't feel bad I really appreciate your opinion =) You did get me thinking though.. You're right it's not the only shape I like, I do like it a lot though, but I also don't want to be "dated".

Some people go for what's in style.
Some people don't care what's in style and just go for what they like.
Either is equally okay.

Others don't have to be just like me.

I have a princess 3 stone (see avatar) and I love it!! My original e ring was a marquis (YES... I was engaged in 1984... couldja tell??? lol!) and after 20+ years, I went for a princess solitaire which I wore for 7 more years until resetting into this 3 stone. I'm very happy with it!! I know its not everyone's first choice, but they are certainly still selling in the stores, and mine makes me happy!

Go with what makes you happy!!! And ... you can always change/upgrade it later! hey - you're on PS, you *know* that happens!!! ;))

My original ER and first upgrade were princess stones. I got the princess because I wanted a square shaped stone. Then I discovered the asscher and really fell in love. I had a lot of problems with my princess ER setting and wasn't completely happy with the stone anyway so I started completely over with my asscher and haven't looked back. My issues with the princess is that they are so susceptible to damage with those four sharp corners. If you do go princess, insurance is key!

Radiants, Marquise and Princess cuts have been out for a while now but they do come back in and out of fashion. More popular cuts at the moment are Cushions, Antique Cushions, Emeralds and Asschers. And of course Round Brilliants are so popular they never go out of fashion....

Buy whatever you love. A diamonds is a personal choice ie whatever makes YOU happy. A top cut Princess, or a Solasfera Princess or a Cut above Princess or look on the Good Old Gold Website (they have a number of high end Princess shaped cuts) are all excellent choices. Anything well cut will always hold its value better and be a much nicer stone irrespective of the style of cut.

Yes, I do consider them out of style now, but I echo the others... buy what you love. :)

Consider buying a stone with a trade-up policy so you have options in the future, if that would help.

I just upgraded my diamond to a princess for our 30th anniversary and love love love it. I had a RB for 30 years and loved it too but I wanted a change. I could have chosen any shape diamond but somehow kept coming back to the princess cut. For me, that was the right choice. You need to choose what you love and don't worry about what someone else says is in or out of style. There are lots of Fancy shapes and I suggest you try out as many as you can before deciding. RB's are beautiful too. You can always find a beautiful setting for whatever shape you choose. Some people say Princesses are out of style but I sure don't see any evidence of that where I am. Good luck whatever you decide!

I am another one who is going to say they are definitely on the way out. I too live in the Rocky Mountain area and we are really the last to let go of a trend or last to jump into a new trend. I have a friend in the business and she has more claims on princess cut stones. Those pointy corners either have to be covered with what I would consider to be heavy prongs or the are out there for damage.

That being said, I have a Radiant and it is set in a very unique setting. It isn't everyones cup of tea but it is what makes me happy and looks good on my childlike hands 8) . SO if you like it and want a princess, you are the one who is going to be wearing it.

I don't know if that helps or if I am repeating what others have said.

Totally out around me. The cushion is in. The halo is popular but that will be out soon too. Wondering what will be in next.
Classic: round, emerald, three stone???

Why go with the trend? Wouldn't it be cool if you wear something different? My only advice is to purchase it from a vendor with great trade in/upgrade policy then you would always have the option of changing it out if one day your heart falls for something different or even BIGGER :naughty:

I think they are on the way out a bit, but both of my younger sisters got engaged this year, and they both have princess e-rings! I think the setting can really made or break the dated-ness.

Make sure you get the shape that YOU want. Don't worry about trends because they're relatively short lived considering how long you'll have your ring (minus upgrades :D ). I love yellow gold but had serious doubts about getting it because yg is clearly not on trend right now. In the end, I went with what made me happy, I got a yellow gold setting and I'm very very happy and satisfied because it's what I wanted.

Princess cuts are trendy to me, and yes, I think their popularity is declining. I don't think they will ever be considered a classic. I am not a fan personally, but you should buy what you love!

I don't think a beautiful diamond in a beautiful setting will never be unattractive - and if it's beautiful to look at who cares whether it's "dated" or "modern"! ::)

I personally don't like princesses. I also personally don't like chunky antique cushions. Get whatever shape you like best and enjoy it!

In your other thread, I responded as to what I myself would choose, since that's what you asked! But I do think you should get what you love, and what appeals to you and not worry about trends. We all have our personal preferences and I'm a firm believer we should all just wear what we love. I live too sheltered a life right now to even be able to say whether or not they are going out of style. I honestly don't know and have no way to judge that. Does it really matter though, as long as you love it and it makes you happy? And stores are still selling them, people are still buying them, and PS members own them and love them. I just reset my diamond into a halo - I debated back and forth on whether halos are a trend, will it be out of style in a few years etc. and then realized I didn't really care lol. If my setting does seem dated down the road and it bothers me, I'll change it. Good luck with your decision!

When I decided to treat myself to a diamond ring for my 40th birthday back in 2004/5, I knew right away that I wanted an emerald cut, and other shapes did not get a look in.

To me, it is not about trend, it is about personal preference.

I don't mind RBs and I love my RB studs that my mum gave to me when I was about 13 to this date, and my mum has said she'll give me her ? 2ct RB in the near future. However, I do not intend to wear it as a ring, and am planning to turn it into a pendant that can take interchangeable drops.

I have always liked step cuts as rings, and find them to be elegant without being showy, even when they are as big as the size of a postage stamp, and often get disappointed not to see many ECs on display when I go jewellery window shopping in ordinary low end to mid-range high street jewellers. Luckily I can get my step cut fix via the internet and high end jewellers. :)

If the ring to be purchased is to last a lifetime for a specific reason, then IMHO one should choose what one likes, regardless of trend.

One can always buy other shapes/size/colour at a later date and have a ring wardrobe, like many PSers have.

Good luck with whatever the OP decides.

DK :)

You should go with a beautifully cut princess in a gorgeous, clean, classic setting - I do NOT think it will go out of style!

This. I totally agree.

You are probably tired of hearing "just wear what you like" when in reality, you are probably not certain that you like princess over all the other shapes, or you wouldn't be asking the question. No one asks "Are rounds too traditional and too common?" We all know the answer to this, but no one seems to bother asking this question (more on this later).
My advice: buy a costume princess ring and try it out and then buy any other shape you are considering and do the same. That should help, but for what it's worth, here is my experience.
I actually owned a princess before I traded up to a round. I finally realized that I wanted a round when I realized that I always seemed to notice them from a distance. At the time, my sister had a smaller round than my princess, but it was always seemed to be shining more than mine (even though mine was certified and hers is not)! So, at that point, as MUCH as I thought I had wanted a princess, and this was because I kept admiring my friends' princess rings because those were the only ones that were constantly in my face, and kept dismissing my sister's round because I felt it was too traditional to be original...I finally realized that I wanted a round because they shine so much and from so a greater distance...I have never look back.

I think the setting makes a huge difference in how modern, or not, any diamond looks. While I don't have a princess diamond, I can appreciate them, they are diamonds after all :naughty:
If I had one I would set it in this setting: http://www.maevona.com/style/85
Very rockin' and modern, to me it screams fresh, young and hip :sun:

There are other square-ish diamonds to consider, which may or may not be available in the specifications/budget/timeframe that you are working with:
Brellia cushion H&A
Regent
Jubilee
Princess of Hearts
Flanders
(and some even more obscure proprietary cuts)

I just never liked the Princess cut. Partly, it's because when it debuted, they were not the best-cut things out there and it was widely known that many of them were just a way to make use of the leftover part of the crystal after the cutter made a decent RB from the bulk of it. Those pointy corners are fragile, as someone noted. I don't like the X going through there, although, if you dig around here some, you'll find that there are different faceting styles for princess. I just prefer arrows or chunky facets to an X and/or lots of teeny facets.

If you want a good costume ring to try, Wink sells some lovely sims.
