A thank you is not outdated, and a verbal thank you is not sufficient either. Due to the expansion of technology, and ease of aquisition, people just take a lot for granted now-a-days. The bride and groom have a year after the wedding to send a thank you, just as a gift can be sent w/n a year of the wedding.... but I think that thank yous just aren''t on people''s radar/priority lists. My friends only sent thank yous to people that would complain to their parents about them being raised w/o manners. I felt slighted because I would have like to have had my gift also acknowledged. Like cashing the check was the thank you? Umm... I don''t think so.

tlh,

You actually make an excellent point for why Thank You notes are possibly even more important than ever: Technology. The ease of acquisition. Lots of people send their gifts through the websites of stores where B&G are registered. So, if you''re a guest, and you have something shipped to someone never having seen or touched it yourself, how do you even know if it got there OK, if no one sends a Thank You note?

So, far from being outdated, I think they''re more important now.

Mediterranean ~ I think this is what bothers me the most. Macy''s stupid registry charged me twice for the gift I sent her, and gave me hell to get the extra $126 dollars refunded! How do I know that she even got the gift if they can''t keep track of the orders properly? What if she is thinking I never sent her one? Well tomorrow I am putting her thank you note in the mail for the wedding gift she gave me. Maybe once she gets my thank you note she will be reminded that she didn''t send one (that is assuming she received the gift).

I don''t agree with the one year time limit.

When DF''s sister got married, we gave them a relatively generous cheque. They got married on a Friday, and cashed it the following Monday. We didn''t have a phone call to say thank you. Over 6 months later we got a scribbled picture saying thank you. I was so offended that she would be so ungracious to her own brother.

In conclusion, I feel that thank you cards should be sent in a timely fashion.

In answer to OPs question, I haven''t ever heard of guests attending weddings without giving gifts, so have no idea if you should send them a thank you. Sorry for not bring more helpful

I''ve always heard that a bride has three months from the wedding date to write thank you notes, but the sooner, the better. As for whether they''re outdated, let me put it this way: when my cousin threw me a bridal shower, I got her a thank you gift and sent a thank you note. Before the end of the week, I had gotten a note in the mail thanking me for the thank you gift. Obviously thank you notes are kind of a big deal with my family if you get a thank you for thanking someone!
