All the red or purple garnets I've seen in person look quite dark. Some online look bright, but I don't know if its just good lighting.
Are there such thing as bright red or bright purple garnets? Can they look as bright as tourmalines?

I am not an expert on any kind of stone, but I do own a rhodolite garnet bracelet. I've had it 18 years, so I could not point you toward a source, but thought you might like to see the color of my bracelet.
The first picture is in indirect sunlight in my car, the second is also in the shade in my yard, I believe.
EDIT: the pictures posted in reverse, so the second one is in the car.

Thanks. Do you find it as bright as tourmalines?

The purple rhodolites tend to get dark the bigger they are. There are bright ones above 2 carats, but it will muddy down in some lighting. The one with a pink/red secondary hue looks brighter. Some stones, if you cut them below a carat, they can be as bright as a tourmaline and will maintain the color in most lighting conditions. Here's a pair of earrings that is as bright as a tourmaline but below a carat, .70carat each stone. Photo lighting not good (this pair is for a friend so don't have them). it is an old photo but even with poor lighting, the rhodolites maintain their color.

So I checked my gem box. I got 3 untreated stones, pink purple shades - a .56 carat tourmaline, and 1.43 and 2 carat purple rhodolites.

The photos taken without flash and special lighting. First and 2nd photos under natural morning light, no sun. Tourmaline in the middle.

Second photo under LED lamp...tourmaline shifted color.

View attachment 503208 I have a pastel pyrope that looks good even in dim lighting. It's never too dark. The colour generally varies between purple and hot pink, depending on the kind of light. I got it from earthstreasury.com.

it's really quite amazing how many colour variations there are for gemstones in the same family!

I wish I had a tourmaline, in order to compare, but it looks like you got some from Seaglow.

I often stare at this garnet. I don't know how big is was, or what it cost but it sure answers10412015_10152468975869321_77419608449269397_n - Copy.jpg
your question!

I don't know if that's true. Vendor photos often show the stone at its absolute best. I bought a garnet online that looked so bright but appeared very different once it arrived. You can't take a vendor's photo at face value, unfortunately. They aren't being dishonest. They are just showing the best side of a gem. It's just the name of the game.

I want to add my own experience. I've had two purple garnets. One precision cut from Jeff White and the other from an online vendor. Both are beautiful but also on the dark side. I think that's why Acinom had her purple garnet set in such an open setting. To let as much light on it as possible.

I think they still look gorgeous. They can get dark in certain lighting conditions and they light up beautifully in others.

Pretty! I love the setting. I have a pastel pyrope garnet too, also from Earths Treasury. My setting is by JuliaB.P1020483.JPG

these ones don't. I don't quite remember, one should be a pastel garnet. Sorry for poor photo.
